Amp tech in Boston?

Anyone know of an amp tech in the Boston (hell, I'll even drive to Worcester) area who I can trust to replace some power supply components in my Boogie T-verb? :dunno:

Re: Amp tech in Boston?

There's Mr. C's in Marlborough (495 & Rt 20). They don't work on them there but whoever they send them to does a good job. There's also this place on Huntington Ave, not far from Symphony Hall (away from Berkeley) but I'm not sure of the name. Basically it's this one dude who just works on gear 24 hours a day. It's on the second floor of this building... I think its called "Boston ???" not sure? Then there's Broken Neck at 1108 Boylston St but I'm not sure if he works on amps.

Good luck!

They are the Mesa-Boogie warranty folks for the area; they are good but sometimes backed up.

Craig from Bay State Vintage on Huntington Ave has a good rep--not sure if he's into M/B though.

You can try calling Cambridge Music (they have two locations, one in Porter Square, Cambridge and the other near Berklee) and they can recommend someone. They might give you Roy Goode's number; he's the best but again I think he is more of a vintage guy. You can probably leave the amp in the store and the guy they use will pick it up.

Oh yeah...I have never taken an amp to Mr. C's but he's a class guy.

Good luck!

Aztech is definitely the place to go. If you're in a hurry, they'll let usually let you pay an extra $20 or so for a rush job.

Thanks guys! Here is the best part - I live in Watertown :smack: My old band used to rehearse on N. Beacon in Brighton, but I would always take the Asrenal St/Market St route so I've never seen that place :22: . :burnout:

Thanks Soop :bigthumb:

Ever had to take the DR in for anything?

Never. I've only had it for 2 years though but I love it. I almost bought the Tremo-Verb head used for like $1300... sounded sweet but the DR had the 3 foot-switchable channels and that sucked me in. I do miss the reverb though...

Yeah, I wish the T-verb either had a 3rd foot-switchable channel or a boost button. That is actually what started this whole thing. I wanted to turn my effects loop into a boost, so having heard good things about VooDoo Amps I was checking out their website to see what they offered, when I noticed that they don't work on Trem-o-verbs :grumble: . I contacted Trace at VooDoo to ask him why they don't work on T-verbs but they do work on regular DRs. He sent me two emails, one explaining why, and a second listing in detail all the things that need to get addressed in my T-verb 1st for them to do a mod. He even recommended that I take it somewhere else for these fixes as VooDoo would have to charge me more than I should be able to get it done for locally. That is one standup guy - no wonder Trace has such a good reputation. :yourock:

Re: Amp tech in Boston?

Do you guys know of any good places to have guitar work done in boston? The only place I know of is Mr Music in allston, and I am not impressed with their work.

I just need to get some pups installed.

Re: Amp tech in Boston?

Jim Mouradian--he's above Cambridge Music in Porter Square. He's great and a great guy (plays bass for Ronnie Earl, does his tech work, too).

I have heard good things about a guy named Whitsell who does work for some local GC's. Also Chris at Mr. C's in Marlboro does good work, too.

Re: Amp tech in Boston?

Jim Mouradian - does he work at Cambridge Music, or does he have a seperate shop? If it's seperate does he have a webpage or do you have his phone number?

Re: Amp tech in Boston?

He's in the same building as CM, but he's got a separate shop. Either Jim or his son do the work; the son is great, too, and they work side by side.

Re: Amp tech in Boston?

I just got my Les Paul worked on by Mr. C's in Marlborough (by Chris). I got the Jimmy Page wiring put in as well as 2 new Duncan pups (Jazz neck, C5 bridge). The work is good and the prices are very fair, but...... he is a bit of a spaz! The parts took forever on mine (gold covers were out of stock). So when they finally came in I think he rushed it because he felt bad I waited so long and he FORGOT to ground the pups. I dropped it back off and he had it ready the next day. Overall, he did very good work and is highly regarded around the area.

The other place I heard does good work is Broken Neck (see my earler post).

I had Mouradian install a Kahler Flatmount way back. When I removed it years later I found that one of the mounting screws had cracked into the bridge cavity and another was screwed in slightly crooked.

The cavity from the previous bridge was very large should have been filled in in some way before the Kahler was installed. The screw that had cracked thru was WAY to close to the edge of the cavity. He should have told me about this before installation. Also, a coil tap switch he installed didnt work in one position and I had to bring the guitar back.

The best guitar guys have bad days like anyone else. If at all possible do it yourself. See if you can scrounge a crappy axe or two somewhere and practice on those with the info here. Thats what did I after years of frustration of dealing with guitar techs. Once I get good at fret dressings I'll be like Mel at the end of "BraveHeart"....FREEDOM!!!!!

Thank god for this forum!!

Spaz is right. I ordered a ABR replacement bridge thru him for my Les Paul Classic and Chris talked me into ordering a different one (I think it was Gotoh) which he insisted would fit on my existing posts. Anyway, once I got the bridge the post holes were like 1.5 mm too big. So I drove there on my lunch break to order it, then to pick it up, then to return it. That was the last trip I have made there. In a back-handed way he did me a favor though, because after doing more research I bought the Tone Pros AVR-II and I couldn't be happier.

Anyway, go see Jim Mouradian. He is on the 3rd floor above Cambridge Music in Porter Sq. He is the man.

I got my pups put in at Daddy's Junky Music on Mass Ave. across the street from Berkelee. If I remember correctly, they only charged about $30.
