Amp Terminology: High Gain

I see this term thrown around quite a bit, and have not seen a definition.

How do you define "Hi-Gain?"

Are other amps "Lo-Gain?"

Discuss. Enlighten me.

Re: Amp Terminology: High Gain

A high gain amp is when it sounds so good that you sit at home and play the guitar all day and gain tons of weight from doing nothing.

A low gain amp sounds like crap so you go out and get some exercise.

So Les, is your next amp gonna be one of these or what?

I agree with this statement.

Re: Amp Terminology: High Gain

High gain is an amp where if you turned the gain to 10, it's too much and the signal just becomes an uncontrollable mess of feedback. Low gain is an amp where if you turned the gain to 10, you'd still need a Tubescreamer or similar pedal to get the distortion you want.

It's all relative

It's all relative

Kind of like trying to objectively define where a thin neck becomes a fat neck.

Re: Amp Terminology: High Gain

Traditionally... Low Gain meant an amp's circuit was designed to not be easily overdriven (I.E. older Fender circuits)

Whereas Peter Diezel's VH4 pictured above was designed for the sole and intent purpose of intentionally overdriving..... Having said that, Ch.1 on the VH4 is probably one the best clean tones out there for a multi channel amp.

Re: Amp Terminology: High Gain

High-gain amps are usually the ones with massive preamp distortion. The ones Barbecue mentioned are basically the ones that make up that category.
