Amp that can do all the older blues tones?

Re: Amp that can do all the older blues tones?

Any good non-master volume tube amp with low wattage will do it. I use a Mesa Blue Angel (18 watts) and an 805 pedal in front of it. I wouldn't put much overdrive on it though. Just get the tubes hot, and get them to distort when you dig in.

Re: Amp that can do all the older blues tones?

get a mid powered tweed amp or a brown deluxe. i love the tweed deluxe but its pretty mushy so might not have enough headroom with humbuckers depending on how loud you need to be and what speaker is in the amp. i use a g12h-30 in my tweed deluxe clone and it does the blues thing really well but im usually using single coils. a tweed bandmaster or super will have more headroom but speakers will determine how loud it is. a brown deluxe is the closest fender to a little marshall ive found.

I will also climb on board the tweed train. The 5E5 Pro was only built for one year, 1955. I found a repro at a modest cost. Around 25 watts, 6L6 cathode-biased power. 12aY7 pre-amp. It came with a Jensen P15N. I made a new baffle and put a JBL D120F in it. It is just nasty sounding.

Blackface Bassman. Most underrated and undervalued amp on the planet( Earth).Anyone notice thes things are getting harder to find at the bargian prices?

and loud as hell to get juicy, not gonna solve any issues with that. it is a great amp which is why they are getting harder to find cheaply. they sound nothing like a tweed bassman which isnt a bad thing, but a different thing for sure

Re: Amp that can do all the older blues tones?

the one watt marshall's are a good idea, I didn't even think about them.. the Fender Blues JR I was thinking of a speaker change to an eminence Texas heat or a Tonker maybe, more blues/low end focused, and tubes would be swapped cause I am stickler about that stuff

Re: Amp that can do all the older blues tones?

Ok so my best bet is either a fender tweed style or the 18 watt Marshall amp.

Any reason not for the Vox AC10? Cause it seems like a potential candidate for the tones same with the blues junior, but I could be wrong.
The Vox AC10 seems viable on paper, but in the real world it has zero clean headroom...To get Buddy Guy or Eric Clapton tone, one needs only a hint of breakup in an otherwise clean setup. I agree with the Mesa amp approach, but you can get it at your budget with a used Blues Deluxe or a used Fender Deluxe Reverb or a new tweed version Fender Blues Jr.
I tried the Vox NightTrain combo and it also did not satisfy though I really wanted it to be right.

The Revv Generator does everything ever perfectly.

Re: Amp that can do all the older blues tones?

seriously? I never heard of them so I googled it...the OP sez ac10 or blues jr are in his budget so you tout an amp whose cheapest model is $1599...it better wax the floors too for that much ...

Bingo! Good idea. Heats are thick and warm and excellent for putting the brakes on an otherwise too loud amp. Excellent in twin reverbs or hot rods, but i reckon it would sound great in a blues deluxe too.
Or you could put in a greenback too to damp things down a little and have a more woody/looser british character. Third option would be the g12m creamback for a similar tone and efficiency, but a slightly thicker low end to compensate for the open backed cabinet.
