Which amp is easier to get high gain at lower volumes, Vox AC10 combo or Marshall DSL 5 combo? I’m still learning how choose an amp.

Re: Amp volume and gain

Well, here is the thing; Gain and volume, at least in anything with a tube (and often those without) interact.

You can get as high a gain level as possible with the gain knob dimed. The real question is how does it sound? Sometimes, often, with tube amps IME, there is a certain minimum volume level you are going to need to get that awesome tone. Solid state will be better at this, but still can have issues.

Modellers do high gain low volume the best. And don't forget - some sounds that you know and love, like Angus or other old school rock are actually output tube distortion. For that, no gain knob is going to have that quality. And it will be loud. If you have never heard an old Marshall on 11, you won't get this. *Warning - as fantastigorically magical as that sound is it destroys amps, speakers, ears, and up to medium sized farm animals its cone of awesome.
