did ampeg used to make guitar heads? i think all they make now is bass heads but did they used to make regular guitar heads?
if so what are some models

Re: ampeg guitar amps?

They made a few. The V4 and the SVT are pretty well known. Lee Jackson also designed some Ampeg heads.

Never liked Ampegs...but the Stones used them for touring.

Re: ampeg guitar amps?

i used an SS-150H Half stack for years, until i got sick of toting that huge thing around. great sounding amp too, and it was even solid state.

Re: ampeg guitar amps?

Just finished playing on my AX70. I've had that amp since 90' and it still rocks! SS power and tube pre. Never had a bit of trouble with it either.

Re: ampeg guitar amps?

I've got a VT-120. It's a 3 channel 120w (switchable down to 60w) 1x12 6L6 amp, and it weights upwards of 80#....one strap on the top to hold it too. It's a freaking monster. It only has two usable channels IMO. The first channel is designed for low-gain work and sounds bright and shimmering- VERY Fender-like. Channel B is designed for mid-gain, you can get some nice crackley barely-clipping and bluesy tones throught that channel. Channel C is designed for high gain. I guess it's not really fair to say it is unusable (the tubes went after about a month of having this amp...got it for free), but I couldn't do much with this channel at the time.

The V4 stuff is thier best from what I hear.

Re: ampeg guitar amps?

There are old Ampegs and new ones.,..the new ones have NOTHING in common with the old ones...the old ones wre cleaner that Fenders of the same time but were much darker in tone...I actually like some of the old Ampeg combos...the smaller ones break up pretty nicely but the bigger ones are loud as hell...like Lew said, the Stones used them for a long time as did Aerosmith currently the guy from the Black Keys uses some older Ampeg amps as does John and the boys from QOTSA.

Re: ampeg guitar amps?

Josh and sometimes Troy from QOTSA use VT's, I hear lots of good things about the V4 stuff. And Lew, not to be picky but the SVT is a bass head.

Re: ampeg guitar amps?

I came VERY, very close to buying an Ampeg Gemini II. One of best clean tones I'd ever heard. Went back to play it with some of my guitars, and the tremolo was broken on it. I didn't wanna have the hassle of that, so I just said 'screw it' and moved on. Sweet amp, though. I'd like to find a smaller Ampeg one day and use it as my clean amp. Those were some incredible tones.

My one gripe was how big it was. Way too heavy for me. Aren't the heads supposed to be ridiculous as well?

There was a guitar Version of the SVT...it's called a V9 and Keef used them a lot in the old days!

Re: ampeg guitar amps?

The VL's are the Lee Jackson designed stuff. Zakk was toying with them at one time. I believe that may have been due to Lee Jackson modding some of his Marshall's. I hear some of the old stuff weighs a ton, but I hear those also have great cleans.

Re: ampeg guitar amps?

One of the sweetest amps I've ever had the pleasure to play though was a Ampeg Super Echo Twin. It had a deep syrupy 3D tone unlike any other amp I had played. The amp was marked $75 or best offer. (Around 15 years ago)
I was advised NOT to buy it... Because at the time 7591A tubes where Imposable to come by at a reasonable price.:smack: DUH !! Who Knew?:13:

Re: ampeg guitar amps?

josh homme from QOTSA uses ampeg guitar amps. he gets a really cool smooth, fuzzy tone from them.

VT22 and V4 are the same amps, one being a head the other a combo.

On these amps, you could set the mid-range with 3 position toggle switches.

Combo was as heavy as Fender Twin Reverb.

Power would decrease after the second set and the amp started to cook.

Not as clean as a Fender, just a better sounding amp.

That smooth fuzzy tone comes from pedals...Ampeg amps do not break up like that on their own...
+1, doesn't he use a Big Muff?

Josh keeps most of his gear a big secret...I know about the Ampegs because you can see them on styage there is also a rack that has a good bit of stuff in it and then his pedal board and I have never heard whats in there for gear...

Re: ampeg guitar amps?

I have an ugly azz 1970 b25 head, just a screamer. Gain ain't lacking one bit. You just gotta run them wide open to get to it. Ampegs have perhaps the most useable EQ of any vintage amp made, the bottom end on em is among the best I have ever heard. If those amps were not so ugly, they would likely be fetching some serious cash. Heck of a bargain right now. They are a huge sounding amp, my buddys V4 will knock down walls. I was shocked at the 'guts' than mine has. Among the best amp scores I have made.

The old Ampegs were designed to be played clean but, like almost any tube amp if you crank it it will crunch...as for pedals they do take to pedals pretty well.
