Anyone have any experience with these? Im curious because A) unlike most little amps, this one uses a 6v6 in the power section, instead of the normal EL84. B) they are on sale at musicians fiend for $149

Re: Ampeg GVT5H?

I played with one in the music shop a couple months ago. Not a whole lot of headroom, but it sounds pretty good. I'm probably gonna get bashed for this, but in my opinion, it sounds a good bit like the Vox AC-4tv.
I can say that I didn't get to crank it and hear the tube break up, but It seems like a great little pedal pusher. I'd say a nice OD and couple other choice effects, and you could have some fun with it.

Re: Ampeg GVT5H?

I heard these GVT Ampegs sound quite a bit like the old Ampeg V4s, VT-22s so I for sure wanna try one for 150 !

Might have to splurge and get the 15 watt model though

Re: Ampeg GVT5H?

The GVT line sounds very good (though nothing like the old V series). I just don't trust Ampeg's build quality any more. And a 5W amp simply wouldn't interest me at all. The 5W setting on my Mesa is easily the best modern 5W amp I've heard...and I still don't like it.

Re: Ampeg GVT5H?

Apparently the guitar lineup completely tanked, and now everyone has pretty much blown all of it out. I bought one of the V30 cabs a couple years ago, and for the price it was much better built than its competition. I wanted to go back and buy the 2x12 recently and they are gone from all the mass merchants..everything is discontinued.

The amp demos I have seen online are beyond unimpressive, but who knows in person. That said, if they sound that great, they would not have discontinued the entire line.....

That's not true at all. Ampeg has always had excellent sounding guitar amp lines that have eventually been discontinued. The old blue amps. The V series. The VL Series. The Diamond Blue Series. All outstanding amps. Much better than Marshalls IMHO. It isn't that they don't sound great. It's that they aren't "cool" to people, so they don't sell.
