Ampeg Portaflex Series PF-350 350-Watt Bass Amplifier Head

Does anyone have experience with these heads? I am looking for something loud and cheap to pair with my Ampeg bass cab for basement jams. My other thought was to pick up an old Fender Bassman head seeing I could also use that for guitar. Not that I need another guitar head. The Ampeg would be the less expensive option. I am not looking for it to sound like a vintage SVT but I want something servicable.

I have used these a number of times in commercial rehearsal studios. I love it: No bells and whistles, great sound. The PF-500 has stuff I don't need, which is why I prefer this one. And I was playing with two loud guitarists and a loud drummer and had no problems keeping up.

I would buy one if the need arose.

GC has one used for $189 +$12 shipping seems like a no brainer. Thanks for the feedback.

These are $299 new on Amazon.

For $350 you can get a 500 watt Hartke LH500. Much better sounding head with a tube preamp. Loud as hell too.

OK, but these are subjective comments. Personally, I have never liked any Hartke I have used.

And I loathe SVTs. To me it's an awful sounding preamp. It makes the bass sound very boxy unless you use the ultra low, which scoops the mids. Their smaller amps are under powered and have gimmicky tone controls. Just give me something that sounds like my bass, but louder.

I'm assuming you never tried an LH series amp. Notice all the former Ampeg users that switched over?

It's basically similar to an Alembic tube preamp (which is a more-or-less a Fender Dual Showman) and a clean power amp. It's not at all like the older solid state amps.

Just to show that I have used Ampegs (I've used just about every amp out there. My first good amp at age 13 was a mid 60s B-15n).

Glad that you are happy with what you have, but this is still completely subjective.
