Amplifiers for master of puppets tone

Re: Amplifiers for master of puppets tone

Diezel VH4's 3. channel will do the trick ,without blasting the power amp tubes!!!..

How much are Diezel VH4s?? In the U.S?

I thought they were using Duncan Distortions while recording MOP? I thought EmG came after. Hmm.. the memory is beginning to go

Kurt was using EMGs by then.

James was using a mixture of EMGs and Invader.

Re: Amplifiers for master of puppets tone

Like mentioned before, an EMG 81 into a Mark IV.....tweak knobs until you are there.

$4399 new.... Used Approx $3750+

Great amp though. So much more than just a metal amp and their customer service is outstanding. I have had one since 2005.

Re: Amplifiers for master of puppets tone

If you can't find a MKIIC+, a Studio pre paired with a Simul-Class poweramp will do the trick. But be prepared to crank it.

Also, I stumbled on a right hand technique that really makes you sound like James. How do I explain it? You want to hold the pick angling back uphill a bit, then downstroke parallel to the guitar body with your wrist pretty much locked. Something like that, anyway.

Re: Amplifiers for master of puppets tone

There's a Master of Puppets preset on the Line 6 Pod XT that nails their MOP tone if plugged into the effects loop of a tube amp. Remember, alot of MOP was rack gear played through Mesas, many of the modelers today sound much better than the ADA MP-1 Metallica was using back then.

Re: Amplifiers for master of puppets tone

Wasn't the Invader made like late 90's?

+1 for the EMG 81 through a Mark IV.

His white Flying V was loaded with an Invader in the bridge. I'm pretty sure that guitar was retired before the 90s even began. Also, I'm pretty sure the Invaders been around since some time in the early 80s.

On a side note: his white Gibson Explorer was initially loaded with stock Gibson 500T/496R pickups, but he switched them to EMGs during the Ride the Lightning tour.

He used both of these guitars to record MOP.

Re: Amplifiers for master of puppets tone

I can get it with my valvestate 100 combo... scoop the mids, add a little verb, crank the highs and gain bring the lows up to where they don't fart but add chunk... pretty close for a shme amp. I can get Kill em' all on almost any amp... that tone isn't really good, but is perfect for what it is. RTL is really thick but tight, can't get that one to save my life. I think they tracked the hell out of that one! Master too, but it is easier for me to get. I think it is easier to replicate muddy mesas, rather than the marshalls. I really like the thick marshall sound they had until the stuff got stollen. AJFA is missing something, and BA is just bon jovi with JH singing!

Re: Amplifiers for master of puppets tone

Its all in the fingers.

The funny thing is, I hate that comment... but in this case, it really is true. I bet you could use anything from an Invader, Distortion, Custom, EMG 81, etc. into a properly EQ'ed (and boosted if needed) MkII, MkIV, Recto, JCM800, ADA, etc. and if you have the Hetfield technique, it'll sound like him. He has the heaviest rhythm technique, many have tried to copy it, some have come close, but no one has surpassed it.

This is a clear mistake in information that gets repeated anywhere. Gibson't 500T/496 R pickups were released much later in the 90's, Hetfield NEVER played them or had him in his explorer.

His Explorer did have the stock gibson pickups which were crappy- I remember playing an explorer of the same year around that time, and everyone was switching out the stocks for dimarzio superd's
