Amps that play nice with pedals

Hello all, I'm new to the forum and had a few questions regarding amps. I'm looking into lunchbox heads, and wanted to know some opinions about the Huges and Kettner TM deluxe 20, Peavy 6560 MH, Engnator tweaker 15, and the Peavy Classic 20 MH. I play mostly classic rock(60's through to 80's hair metal), 80's and newer country, heavy blues, and some pop.Which amp would be best? I also plan on a fairly good sized pedal board so will they take pedals well? Thanks!😀

Re: Amps that play nice with pedals

Out of those the Peavey Classic is probably best and the Tweaker second. The 6505 is OK, but IMO doesn't seem like the best amp for what you want to do. I don't have any experience with the new Tubemeister Deluxe series, but the original TMs are very picky with ODs and distortion pedals.

Re: Amps that play nice with pedals

2nd the Peavey Classic as it takes pedals quite well.
I'd check out the Holey Boards if your also looking for a new pedal board. They are extremely nice and well designed. The Zip tie idea is so much better then stupid velcro. I don't really care for velcro on Pedal boards. I built my own pedal board and used velcro on it and I actually hate it.
hughes and kettner are pretty fantastic amps and if you wanted to go what way why not go use the internal effects? All intergraded and foot with controllable. They are a complete solution which requires no external pedals at all.

Re: Amps that play nice with pedals

Anything that you can run with lots of clean headroom that you can drive to that edge of breaking up and be at a comfortable volume level will be a great pedal platform. That's why Fenders and the VOX ACxx series are considered great pedal platforms.

Re: Amps that play nice with pedals

I have a Hughes & Kettner Tubemeister 18 30th Anniversary, and I love it, but it's finnicky about pedals. Plug in your favorite brand-X flavored dirt box, and you may or may not get what you want. This wouldn't be a problem if the built-in tones were enough for me. Don't get me wrong -- you can get some great sounds out of it. I just can't get every sound I want from it, is all.

This year I bought a couple of Fenders, for cleans and pedal-platform use. They sit right next to the Tubemeister and the cabs.

Ok so let me ask this. If I go for, say, a Fender clean amp will it be bedroom volume friendly? That's why I like the Peavy amps, the attenuation down to 1 watt. Im thinking that the Bogner LA Grange will be my boost/od pedal.

Specifically about the Peaveys, I don't think that the 6505MH has the headroom you want to play with pedals. It's a rock amp, modeled on EVH's famous 5150; it might work well with a gain boost (but it's got enough footswitchable options to switch gain-related tones that I doubt it would be necessary for you), maybe a wah, but this isn't the amp you choose for dripping-wet smeary reverb/chorus tones or similar synth-over-clean tones. The Classic 20 MH, maybe; that circuit's designed for a more vintage low-gain sound based on the Classic 30, and you can get decent volume and tone at higher gain settings without pushing it into overdrive (but it'll still crunch pretty good). Still doesn't do the Fender clean tones but much, much closer than the 6505MH.

Re: Amps that play nice with pedals

I have an egnater Rebel 30 and I loves pedals... But you technically don't need od/fuzz/distortion... However, it's worth experimenting.

Re: Amps that play nice with pedals

My addition to the obvious and other great amps mentioned so far...

Traynor Custom Special 50 or 90 models. Underrated and usually found underpriced as they are no longer in production and not well known. They come stock with a CelV30.

Genz Benz Black Pearl 30. Single channel with a great mid gain drive.

Mesa DC30. I had the head and it was glorious. Not your typical dark Boogie tone.

And finally, my current amp, Revered Hellhound 40/60. I have the head, a 112 cab with a Red Fang and a 212 Legacy loaded with V30s. It is the only head I've found under $600, weighs less than 30 lbs and can handle a 4Ohm load.

Re: Amps that play nice with pedals

I find that usually, it is the non-master volume amps that do the absolute best with pedals. That isn't to say they all do, but I've had the most luck with them. I also dig a (SS) Tech21 Trademark 60, which takes pedals exceptionally well.

doing this same thing at the moment. some Fenders do this exceptionally well. I am using Celestions for this reason cuz they sound good with a distortion pedal.

Re: Amps that play nice with pedals

A used Mesa DC-3 would be a great choice, as would a TA-30, Express 5:25, F-30 or even the Mini-Rectifier. All of these are great with pedals. Solid construction, pro features...including efx loops.

I have to tell you, the Mark V:25 head and stack I bought is becoming one of my all-time favorite amps. I've used it on a couple of gigs now and it is just a blast to play. Aside from the two 112 Mini-Recto cabs, I've used it with a couple of different 212 cabs, and my Boogie 412 Half-Back EVM cab...AMAZING!

I know it's a stretch financially, but this amp sounds so good...is so versatile...it could be the amp for a lifetime. The other amps you've listed are good, but I believe the V:25 is worth the extra dough.
