Okay technically these are not "tubes" as my thread says but functionally, yes. Considering how well all the other AMT gadgets work , I'm thinking about something big coming.

I had a feeling we´d see something like this eventually. I wonder how they sound compared to a new tube & to a NOS equivalent.

I'd like to try them in amps that aren't too great to begin with. You know those amps where you try a lot of tubes to "fix" something, and there's only one tube that seems to sound right. It seems some of these will go in and really mix things up, for better or for worse.

Not sure how much voicing the AMT's will have but I'm also referring to these

I heard about these awhile back. I wonder if they have the reliability and convenience of solid state but the warm dynamic sound of tubes?

I like the fact that they have preamp and power tubes. If they're cheap enough, I can see grabbing a tube head and using it for recording and not having to worry about burning out tubes when using a dummy load.

Kinda sucks that they're almost 3 times the price of regular tubes. The fact that they *should* last forever does make them tempting. I wonder if AMT's version will be cheaper. Was doing a Google search on the Jet City ones and found this on the Gibson forum:

Hah. That's why I try to avoid hearing modeling samples. Every time I hear a good one, I think "damn, that does sound good..." and it makes me feel like a bit of a shmuck, and maybe a fuddy-duddy too, for having no interest in them whatsoever. I don't really want to know what I'm missing. Ok, I'm a little curious, but I'm probably better off not knowing.

What would interest me is flavours that are different to the type of tubes seeming they are emulating tubes with solid state components. Like an EL84 that acts like an EL84 and has the same output but has the harmonic structure of a 6L6 or a 12AX7 that sounds like an EL34 distorting in the front end, obviously alot of not so intended bad sounds may come of that but it means you could get things the amp manufacturer didnt intend.

I'd be interested in the 6L6 replacements for high headroom amps that I never really get to the level of distortion in the power section. Not sure I would trust the 12AX7's to do as well in terms of creating a sweet and familiar tube tone. They're probably ungodly expensive, though.

I think you'd find that has a very limited application. Power amp tubes tend to distort MUCH less than preamp tubes. If you're really curious, check out Peavey's Revalver amp sim. I've tried all the amp sims out there and it seems to be the best sounding one. It also lets you modify the tubes inside the amps, so you can experiment there and see how it'd sound.

Considering what AMT has done with JFET pedals, I'm willing to bet they've got this about 99% there. They've got their target audience, and you're probably not it.

AMT's pedals are only a little more expensive than Boss pedals, I'm hoping they'll get these in at or around the price of regular tubes. Not sure where they're being assembled, but the parts going into them should only be around $9 from what I've read about previous attempts. Even if they're a little more expensive than cheap tubes, the fact that they should last forever even under high strain is a huge plus.

There have been a few companies to attempt this.

I took the plunge and invested in two Tonegrinder 12AX7 replacements.

Conclusion: We are not close to a solid state 'tube' yet.

I think it might depend on what you're looking for though. Weren't those a little hotter than what you wanted? For someone like me that's looking for huge amounts of gain, that kind of thing is right up my alley. (Price-wise though, it's not. )

The important questions are these.

How do they compress? How do they clip? How do they SOUND?

And, of course, how much is the end product going to cost once the novelty wears and the design is adjusted to compensate for consumer feedback?

It seems like you would be right, but I still want to see for my self. Who knows, it may lack some qualities but provide other good qualities that could make them desirable.
