so im looking for a combo amp (wont be able to fit a head and cab in my apartment) that can give me a decent tone for metal (e.g. iron maiden, metallica, dream theater)

preferably looking for a solid state as I wont be able to crank up the volume in my place

so any recommendations for a combo thats no more than about $500?

Re: an amp for metal

You're not looking for solid state. Let's stop that nonsense right now.

What you appear to need, sir, is the venerable HT-5. Four hundred bucks brand new. I would suggest you grab a head so you can pair it with 12-inch speaker(s).

Re: an amp for metal

what about a preamp? if that the case I would recommend you the Engl tube preamp E530. You can use the direct out (4x12 sim) for pc recording and the headphones out (1.5watts). Check out this demo:

don't expect to sound like that, but you can get it very close.

How are you able to fit a combo in your apartment, but not a head and a speaker cab? It makes no sense. The head and cab will only add 3-5 inches more space.

As for volume, it's called a volume nob. Just cause it can go to 10, doesn't mean you can't play it on 1.5 just saying.

Re: an amp for metal

ya there is lots of combo choices... i myself would be more happy with a clean channel of a C30 with some Heavy Metal style pedals over using any modeling... but some players make great use of modeling and those modelers always sound best for those higher gain sounds to my ears...

a new Peavey 6505 1x12 combo may suit your needs more then you think... they are not that costly... and they would work great in jam sessions and or band setting...

basicly what i have is 2 ways of thinking... i have low volume amps for quiet home/bedroom practices... and then i have differnt Loud amps for jamming... i gave up trying to find one amp that does it all...

Re: an amp for metal

I call BS on the no head and speaker cab thing and suggest a Mesa Single Rectifier. The Dual is a lot louder and a lot more money. GC is blowing out the Singles these days anyway. They're also clearer, more articulate and brighter.

If you're set on a combo, I second the modeling amp. I'm a big fan of the Line 6 Bogner MKII 212.

I'd buy one but I know it would just sit since I have a Mesa.

Re: an amp for metal

Check out Tech 21 TM series amps.

If you must go with solid state, Tech 21 makes the best sounding SS amps, IMO.

+1 to Vox hybrid amps. They sound great as well. I've got a AD15VT thats sounds amazing. Or, get a Nightrain. :1:

Re: an amp for metal

I love it how people start threads asking for an apartment amp and then get a bunch of recommendations for amps that are more suited for stadium gigs.

There is always the krank jr's. They have a Rev. JR. and a krankenstien Jr. Both are 20 watts. But after you buy a cabinet they are way out of that price range.
They are meant for metal and metal only, but they're good at it.

Re: an amp for metal

I have the 6505 112 combo, and it sounds great cranked, but if you can't ever put it to at least 3 it's pointless to get. I'd recommend an Ibanez TBX combo. Good metal tones at a great price.
