An idea: HBs (Seths, 59s, A2Ps, PGs...) to fit P90 slots...

I have an idea, and wanted to share and get your feedback.

How about getting the good PAF versions of Duncan in sizes to fit p90 slots? There are many Gibson 60's tributes around, and some of those people may be interested. Such 59's, PGs, A2Ps whatever could be quite a success. No?

BTW I am aware that the custom shop does such buckers. And my "idea" (whatever it's worth) concerns the general crowd, and not pickup nerds like me... :)

So what do you think?

Best,

B

It would be a good thing for folks, but it would take away a lot of the demand for the CS version, I think.

My friend Michelle has a P90-sized humbucker in the neck slot of her LP Special. I will ask her what pickup it is next time I see her. Maybe GFS.

There's very few guitars with P-90's compared to HB's. Almost all of the guys with P-90's are hardcore fans. If they wanted PAF's, there's hundreds of HB models to choose from in every price range. It would take a lot of development time and resources to appeal to a miniscule part of the market. You couldn't justify the cost.

If I bought a p90 guitar, it would be for those pickups.....hell I have 2 p90s guitars bought specifically for p90s.

Plenty of hummer guitars about to choose from in all price ranges, plus mini hummers too.

+1

They already have hummers to fit P-90 routs...They're called mini humbuckers, and Duncan has some good ones to choose from.

true, but to fit minihums im my sg i would have to get a new pickguard. and the look of my guitar would change. i would love to have a 59 or a Custom series in a p-90 format in the bridge of my sg classic.

then i wouldnt miss my bucker sg at all. gosh that would rock. ant p-90 neck and a p-90 version of a Custom. vintage a modern...

i wonder if dimarzios bucker p-90s are any good. if they had a air norton p-90 i would rock that...

The vast majority of SG's are slotted for two HB's; you should have gotten one of them and put an HB-sized P-90 in the neck. That's what everybody does who wants to mix HB's and P-90's. And because that solution is so readily available, there's no reason to reverse-engineer it.

What you can do with your SG Classic is swap magnets, and put in an A8 (making it an A8/A5) or an A8/A4 which will add mids and output and give more of an HB sound. I do that to all my bridge P-90's.

If you want humbuckers in your SG Classic, get a SG Standard pickguard from WD Music or someplace like that and load it with humbuckers of your choice. Then you'd have two loaded pickguards for one guitar.

I say WD Music because I was thinking of doing the same thing with my SG Classic and they had the best price that I could find, crazy enough. But, I love the P-90's in it and ever since swapping the volumes out to 500K, even happier.

JB90 owner.

Engineering a conventional humbucker to fit under a P90 Soapbar or Dogear cover involves altering the dimensions of the bobbins slightly and, of course, losing the traditional metal cover. These changes have some effect on the overall sound that the pickup produces.

The JB90 does not sound exactly like the JB upon which it is based. I doubt that similarly re-engineered PAFs, Seths and so on would sound exactly like their conventional equivalents.

For what it is worth, for hum-cancelling pickups that will fit a P90 rout, I suggest TV Jones.

Good to know, thanks for sharing... This I did not know.

Having tried a very nice and alive La Cabronita, I am definitely jonesing for TV Jones...
