An unusual guitar in my workshop

It's an "Airline" from the sixties I believe. They were primarily a "catalogue" guitar, sold I believe through Sears - Roebuck.

Re: An unusual guitar in my workshop

hmmmm that would be a nice project guitar...re paint..new pickups...and whats with the pic of the spice girls on the right there???

Re: An unusual guitar in my workshop

The inlays look cheap, and I hate those black strips on the thing. Other than that, I kinda like it.But I think it'd still look bad (or at least not awesome) after a lot of work.

Agreed. Al are you a distant relative of mine that I don't know about??

:laugh2: :laugh2:

Re: An unusual guitar in my workshop

lol
Thanks dude!

I was thinking those strips might cover up the cavities. They might not be removable. If so, that's a lame guitar. If you can take 'em off, then it may be ok.

But it looks so cheap! Only 6 fret markers (inlays)? Headstock? Blech.

that pictures not coming up...

taking FOREVER to load...

on Netscape Nav 8.1 here, windoze XP if that matters...

Re: An unusual guitar in my workshop

I don't see the pic, but I know what an airline is... I kinda like em ;) More would like the things if people weren't afraid of being associated with the guy from the White Stripes.

Thank him for them actually being worth some money now

Made of fiberglass as I recall, but the new reissues aren't...

Gotta see the spice girls pic :D

Re: An unusual guitar in my workshop

It's only interesting because of its rarity. It plays like crap and is impossible to set up.

There is a guy making clones of them now, although it's not the same manufacturer as originally made them. I hope he's making a better job of it.

The body is chambered to reduce weight; huge round ones like Swiss Cheese. The p/ups sound good actually, but have no up/down adjustment. Intonation is approximate at best. I'm told the last one went on e-Bay for about £3000.

Sorry for the slow load time Moose, it's only about 150kb. I'll try compressing it down a bit, but Netscape isn't noted for its graphic rendering speed as I recall. It may be a local data bottleneck or something, I dunno...

Re. the spice girls photo; you have discovered my deep dark secret. I'm a closet Spice Girls fan. The are only two degrees of separation between me and Geri as my friend Anna went to school with her in Watford and my favourite, Mel C now lives just up the way from me in Tintern.

I'm over my dismay at their splitting now, but the photo was a present from my late mum when I moved into my workshop in Newport in 1997, so I've kept it.

Amazing that you all spotted that one and not the photo of me and Satch on the left...

The black strips are actually the control plates, so they are integral to it. There is a three way switch and individual volume and tone controls on each pickup.

I think the world would be boring if every guitar looked the same so i quite enjoy these quirky designs, even if I wouldn't choose one as a working instrument.

It's simple enough that it could easily be replicated without the hassle of having to make large numbers of dedicated components. It's just a shame it plays like a baseball bat...

Re: An unusual guitar in my workshop

pic wont load for me either (using firefox on windows xp)

I think it's a problem with image shack. My browser often stalls at their home page. I go away and make a cup of tea while it loads.

But i haven't found an image host that is any more reliable. With Fapomatic some people reported that they couldn't see the images at full size even though they renedered perfectly on my mac at home here.

Firefox is a Moz based browser like Safari, so I don't think the browser is the issue. The picture isn't showing up for me at the moment either, but i know the link is there...

Re: An unusual guitar in my workshop

OK guys, is that any better?

Image Shack was completely offline so I switched to Fapo...

Re: An unusual guitar in my workshop

If it's of decent quality, I'd swap some Alnico II lovin' into it, going Alnico II Pro neck, Pearly Gates middle, and CC bridge, but hey, I'm weird too :D
