aNaLoG.MaN Beano Boost

Well, after getting my Analog Man King of Tone pedal I got a chance to snag up another one of Mike's signature pedals, Thanks again Zack!

Anyway, I did have to give up a mihgt sweet handmade booster pedal to get it and while I do miss the other pedal this one is much more suited for what Im doing with it.

I figured after checking out my KoT and looking at the quality of it's build quality and listening to the tones I got out of it I decided I couldn;t loost with another AM pedal!

For those that don't know the Beano Boost is a clone of the famed Dallas Rangemaster Treble Booster. Now, if you don;t know what a Ranmgemaster is...read up, you need to know this! I will more than likely never have an original Rangemaster as the original units bring in excess of a grand these days but the AM Beano is as close as anoybody can get...right down to a NOS, made in England NKT 275 germanium tranny!!

It has a 3 way tone switch...the middle selection is the stock Rangemaster setting then there is one with more mids and one with more lows. If you play a Gibson gutar (or something with buckers) and a Marshall or tweed(ish) Fender amp this pedal kills...it does well with other things but it really excells with buckers and amps that are on the darkish or midrangy side.

It is not a stand alone distortion unit or even an overdrive but if the amp is alreay cooking the Beano will push oyu to a whole new place...more gain, sustain and a nice treble (actually kind or upper middy) bite to the notes that make them cut through the mix and add some agression to the overall tone.

Eric Clapton, Jimmy Page, Tony Iommi, Rory Gallagher, Brian May and even georget Lynch know about this wonderful effect since they all have or had original Rangermasters and used them at one point...and I know why!

Nice. I'd like to pickup like 4 or 5 of his pedals at some point. How's it with the Deluxe? For some reason it seems like it would be awesome to me.

Well, the Deluxe is very much tweed in nature...much more tweed than blackface. In answer your question it KILLS!!!

My Deluxe sounds killer on 3 or 4 on it's own, but the Beano adds some more grit and a killer bite to the notes...they seem even more alive and jump out of the speaker.

Mike's pedals are top notch for sure, don't be afraid at all to get some of them!

Re: aNaLoG.MaN Beano Boost

Cool. I have the Bad Bob and I like it a lot, ditto for his Silver Mod TS9.

It's good to see reviews like yours on here.

Thank you.

Re: aNaLoG.MaN Beano Boost

I'm looking at getting a Sunlion next year. Thats 2 in 1 pedal with a Sunface (fuzzface clone) and a beano boost. The two of them switched on at once is supposed to nail the tonebender sound so It's kind of like 3 in 1. Thanks for the review.

I know about the Sunlion...I was gonna order one until this Beano came up for grabs so now Im just gonna order the Sunface!

However, you do need to know that a fuzzface being run with a Rangemaster is NOT a Tonebender sound and that was not the idea with the Sunlion...just an FYI. I'd hate for you to buy that pedal hoping to nail a tonebender type tone...

Oh no, that was just an added bonus. I had been researching sunfaces and beano boosts for a year before I discovered that. It's wierd that you say that, I read something by mike on his site about how it did nail the tonebender sound and that was why they stopped making tonebender clones.

It was here: http://analogman.com/sunlion.htm

"In early 2005 we combined these two pedals, the BEANO BOOST and SUNFACE into a new pedal – the SUNLION! The result of this combination turned out to be much more than the sum of it's parts- an amazing sounding Tri-Germanium fuzz! We have made several three-transistor Tonebender MK-II pedals but they are not possible to make as consistently perfect sounding as our Sunface or Beano Boost so we stopped making them. We find the Sunlion an excellent alternative as it can get the same sounds with both sides on, plus MANY MORE sounds and so much more flexible. "

Maybe it gets it in the general area or something. Anyways, I'm sure you can get some interesting tones out of the two combined. It's cool to finally see someone on here who got a beano boost, it's one of number one things I've been gassing for for some time now. Do you think it would go good through an orange?

Re: aNaLoG.MaN Beano Boost

Did I read an interview where Billy Gibbons was talking about liking this pedal, and using it for the low boost?

Re: aNaLoG.MaN Beano Boost

Don't get me wrong...it can get some MKII(ish)( tones but it's not gonna nail a Tone Bender.

Like I said, I was gonna get a Sun Lion but this Beano popped up and now Im looking into a FF...Im almost positive I'll end up with the AM on that as well but there are one or 2 others Im looking at!

There are several Tonebender clones out there that are real nice but so far I have not been blown away by one...

As for the Beano and an Orange, I would say yes and no...it all depnds on the setting, the Orange in question and the speakers...the Beano (or any quality rangemaster) is pretty toppy sounding, a bright amp or sharp sounding speakers could lead to a not so good tone, however if the amp is warm and thick sounding the Beano will add some nice cut to the tone w/o killing off the lows and mids while adding some nice vintage germanium grit!

The Beano has a tone switch...the middle setting is the stock Rangemaster setting, up is a mid boost and down is the low boost...it's nice in all settings to be honest but depending on your rig some work "better" than others.

Re: aNaLoG.MaN Beano Boost

Killer stuff...Congrats! And some pics please, gutshots if possible.

I am a poor guy, so I built my own Rangemaster and I am happy with it. Running a Rangemaster into a FF type pedal(I have a ToneFactor Huckleberry) is sooooo badass..I was grinning like an idiot the first time I hooked it up this way:D

Re: aNaLoG.MaN Beano Boost

Thanks guys!

This pedal really is pretty great...I know it's just a rangemaster clone but it's a dang good one!!!

I'll work on getting some more pics soon...I have several things that I have no pics of and the new pedals are on that list.

I haven't really boosted any fuzzes with it yet but I bet it gets pretty wild!

Re: aNaLoG.MaN Beano Boost

It is a great pedal, I just run a strat with 500k pots, Custom 5/Lil 59/Jazz pickups, thin 1 piece maple neck through a 65 reissue super reverb. WAY too bright for my ears, that's why I'm putting in Alnico II's. But I played my friend's Paul (a standard from a few years ago) through a mediocre tube Marshall & turned the beano on it was INCREDIBLE. I just don't have an extra $__k to throw around for a paul & a marshall right now. & I got a helluva trade... That **** Solid Gold Sndlabs "The Boost"... thanks for the deal dude.

Re: aNaLoG.MaN Beano Boost

Hehe NKT275 germanium goodies!

Even with a terrible pic my man sees the prize!!!

I tried some Rangemaster clones with OC44's in them and was really worried that the NKT275 wouldn't sound as good...I WAS DEAD WRONG!!! It's just as good, if not better! It's smoother on the top and seems to have a little less noise!
