Since I have gotten into economy picking I decided that I should try a smaller pick since it's been a little difficult to perfect the technique and I picked up a little bag of these John Petrucci jazz picks.

I was using standard tortex picks in 1.14 gauge.

These are great! The tip itself is ultex. I am really enjoying this pick and would like to try more of the different models in this size.

What do you like about the jazz 3 design? I've noticed my picking is a lot cleaner!!

Has anyone tried the Eric Johnson pick? I'm very interested. I understand that they're nylon though and that worries me since I don't like the attack itself of nylon but if they're super thick I don't think it will be much of an issue.

Just posted adoration in another thread, I went from purple Jazz Is to purple Tortez Jazz IIIs; there's a bit more dynamic control from the pointed tip if the III, but it doesn't glide over the string so smooth as a I, which I think are better for speed. That said, I'm using the carbon/grip Jazz III at the moment.

How thick are those purple Tortex Jazz IIIs? I haven't seen them- I'd probably like them.

Purple Tortex H3 is 1.14mm... The Greens are still stiff/useable, the Tortex Red is spaghetti.

I am using Jazz III but only larger ones XL's now for about 3 years. I like the sound and feel, they sound more agressive than standard Dunlop picks like Nylons i used before. they are pointy and extremly focused for solos and i like that.

My second favorite pick at the moment. Bought some Planet Waves Black Ice 1.5 mm and like them even better. The attack sounds a bit thicker with them.

I also bought some 3 mm purple Big Stubbies and Jesus tapdancing Christ are they awful for guitar or what?
Great picks for bass though.

Re: And All That Jazz: Jazz 3 Users Unite!

OP, how different is the Petrucci pick from the regular Jazz III?

My favorite and only pick is the carbon fiber Jazz III. I grew up using the regular red and black Jazz III picks, but the carbon fiber one solved the problem of dropping picks. Now I don't drop any picks anymore.

The carbon fiber Jazz III is an indispensable part of how I play. It makes me able to express myself in any way (well, strumming isn't so easy but I don't really strum) via pick attack.

I can understand my attachment to the carbon fiber Jazz III. I remember reading an interview with Ty Tabor of King's X where he said he was so dependent on a certain pick that he was looking to buy the mold in case the pick ever stopped being made.

Huge Jazz III fan
Use the Petrucci and Hammett Sig Picks
Also use the Xl ultex and XL blacks with stiffo, 3mm jazz iii stubbies, carbon fibre max grip jazz iii and 1.35mm Tortex jazz iii
3mm are my favourite because I'm playing 11-70 in drop A and it's nice and fast for tremolo picking for me

The petrucci picks are a little larger in size than the standard jazz 3, the tip is made of ultex. The JP logo is a little raised and provides grip. They have much less friction on the strings than the tortex i am used to!
