And then I put a clean booster in the effects loop...

I've always used all my boosts and drives into the front of the amp, keeping the loop primarily for delays and reverbs. I don't know what got me thinking on it the other day, but for the first time I put my clean boost (TC Spark Mini) at the tail end of the loop, last thing before the power tubes, and I'm LOVING the results.

Essentially, with guitar volume control, pedal(s) gain, preamp gain, and now power amp boost, I've just got a world of flexibility with minimal tap-dancing (I sing in our three-piece, so have to do pedals by muscle memory).

Just love how there's always something different to try and to learn from!

What amp do you have and what difference did you get from before?

The Spark Booster can be used exactly how your using it. Your essentially Boosting the Preamp instead of Driving it in the front end. Very smart move and a good use of the Spark.
I have the full size pedal and I use it as a Overdrive pedal and not a Boost pedal. I like the Mid Range push with a 10 O Clock setting on the gain. I have the volume about 9 O'clock , the Bass control about 1 o'clock and the Treble at 12. This is a better solution for my tone then the Ibanez Tube screamer ever was.

Yeah, up until now the Spark Mini was the last pedal before hitting preamp, so basically a diminishing returns thing dependent on what was driving before it - often just saturating an already driven tone. Now, it's a great big MORE pedal - pushing the power tubes whatever the preamp is putting out.

Today, it was my Mesa Rectoverb 25 on the clean channel in Pushed mode, power tubes at 25W. The interesting thing with that amp is that the Master Volume does very little for the first third of its sweep - then jumps to life - a definite cut over, in either 10W or 25W setting. Now, the boost in the loop gooses things wherever the MV is set. Just much louder without increasing compression. I'll see if I can get some clips tomorrow.

It's a great way to get a SERIOUS level boost, especially if you are already crunching the preamp so you're headroom is squashed. I used to do it all the time with my Splawn Quickrod.

I use a CAE line driver in the loop of my amp for a lead boost. It doesn't colour the sound and can get as loud as you like.... in fact it can be too loud if you're not careful!

I used to do that with my old amps but I just use the "solo" option on my Mesa.
