to go with a custom bridge for a balanced hi-fi ceramic set ?
I have tried a 59 and found that bass were muddy under gain , not enough mids made the p-u a bit not punchy .
So i guess with a ceramic mag the bass would be tighter and it would have more mids and probably a higher resonnance frequency ( 6khz for the TB5 and 5,5 for the TB14 )
So it could a great match with the custom for a perfect balanced set EQ wise and ouput wise .
Anybody tried it , or any comments about it ?

I would think in the neck the output would be too high to get a decent clean but I could be wrong. I do think that the '59 in the neck is muddy as well....dont' like it at all.

59 neck is muddy with gain that's why ceramic could improve it , like if you compare sh5 over sh14 : more power and mids , tighter bass .

IMO with a ceramic magnet the '59 would sound like a hurricane going through a huge pile of dirt. Serious mud.

I've been wondering about putting a ceramic magnet in one of my neck pickups. My guess it that it would fill in the mids and extend the highs, so it may bery well sound less muddy than a stock 59n. If you have a spare ceramic magnet, why not pop it in and find out?

As an alternative to converting a 59 into something its not, you might want to try a neck Invader, which has almost the same DC resistance as the 59, but with the ceramic magnet. Also, the Distortion is a great neck pup, with a ceramic mag.

I've had a Distortion in the neck of my Patriot - all by itself - for quite some time now. It "splits" great also.

Yes there are ceramic p-u available for neck but i thought of a ceramic 59 because i have both 59 and spare magnet AND to get a p-u that have the same EQ than the Custom .

I've actully got a 59' in the neck of a telecaster right now, with a Small ceramic mag (like in a custom) and it sounds amazing. Its probably the most articulate neck pickup I've ever used. Although it does lack the bass it had before. The bass didn't tighten up so much, as completely disappear. Which is fine for the guitar its in. Sounds great clean, and sounds just as great distorted. Truely the most articulate neck bucker I've ever used. Great note separation. So I'de highly recommend this mod.

But make sure you use A small ceramic magnet instead of a large one (like in a duncan distortion). I had tried it with a large ceramic, and it sounded horrible. Seriously muddy. far muddyer under gain than a stock 59'. The only reason I even tried the Small ceramic is because I had already put the A5 from the 59 into another pickup. So I had to find a decent replacement. And luckly I had that small ceramic laying around.

So I suggest trying it. I'm sure a small ceramic would kill some of the bass for you, and Possibly make you like the 59 alot more.

Thanks LowFi , this was the kind of confirmation i expected ; less bass , more dynamic and did the ceramic mag made the 59 more powerfull and with more mids , and about the highs i suppose they are more agressive , more harmonics ?
I'll try that as soon as my guitar arrive , with a ceramic of a 490 Gibson .
And will give a review .

I think a ceramic in a 59 is a bad idea. To my ear, the 59 has a big mid scoop and in most guitars it sounds a little shrill and screetchy. Slapping in a ceramic would make it even more so.

Unless your guitar is unusually naturally bass-heavy and needs more bite, stay with the Alnico 5, or consider going the other direction with an Alnico 4.

If you're going to try a ceramic in a PAF-clone pickup, I recommend the Alnico 2 Pro and maybe the Seth Lover.

Yeah, deffinately less bass, and More mids (although not too much), I dunno about more dynamic (seems about the same in that department), the highs are a bit more agressive (but not in a "shrill" sort of way). I'm not sure what you mean by "more harmonic" though. So I dunno about that.

But uhm, yeah. Doesn't the Gibson 490 pickup use alnico 2 magnets? I'm fairly possitive it does. Unless you mean the 496r (which is ceramic), or the 500t (which is also ceramic). But even those have the "large" ceramic magnets. And a Large ceramic mag would Make the pickup More bassy, and certainly muddyer. You need the ceramic mag out of a duncan custom. They're the same Size as an alnico magnet. The larger ones (as used in a 496r, 500t, or Duncan distortion) wouldn't really solve the "too much bass" problem. They'de actully make it worse.
So make sure you use a SMALL ceramic magnet. And deffinately give a review.
