And You Thought PUPS Were Expensive

Re: And You Thought PUPS Were Expensive

That's absurd.

How exactly does one determine that pickups rings are original? Because unless there's a surefire way of doing so, anybody who pays $500 for them is an idiot.

hmmm logically it doesn't make sense. Just a piece of plastic. Just take some new ones and age them with coffee and sandpaper. There - done.

For the wood of a guitar, the paint and metal parts and pickups, I can understand that. For wood especially - it ages over time, and you cannot simulate that easily. But i guess someone is relying on the fact that in the future an all original 60s les paul will cost astronomical sums of money, because it will be a timepiece. Like what we view a 17th century lute as.

IIRC there were raised letters on the bottom of hte originals, M-somewhatorother.

I´m fairly certain that such forensic details as mold lines /tree attachment points, machining /processing marks (for example from a gripper that was used to pull them from the mold, pure speculation whether or not this is /was the case) and similar can be used to help ID and most likely are. If you think that CHarvel bean counters are anal retentive you´ve never seen the electron microscopes, geiger counters, NASA probes and FBI Special Units that suddenly come out of the woodwork when a real high dollar vintage piece pops up.

I swear, sometimes I think those guys could tell you if the screws holding the trussrod cover are original or were lost and what exact year, plant and charge the replacements are from :laugh2:.
