Does anyone have direct experience with this pickup? I'm thinking of putting one in the bridge of my Dean USA ML to replace the 500T that's there now. I have an HN3+ in my '79 Ibanez Artist and really like it, but I'm shooting for a thicker, fuller, bassier sound with the Dean. Obviously, suggestions for a Duncan equivalent are welcome as well.

I have one. Just took it out of a USA Charvel SoCal I'm dumping. Didn't sound bad imo. It's rated as their hottest pickup (or one of) so I'd assume the 500T is doing the same job already.

For a warmer tone I'd go with one of the Ducnan Custom models (Custom, Custom 5, CustomCustom).

I was hoping for something with the heat of the 500T but with better clarity and more tightness. I'm afraid the Custom-class pickups might not have the power I'm after, though I've never used any of them before and could therefore be mistaken.

Well, generally speaking, you're going to lose some output to gain warmth, and lose some warmth (low end) to gain output. Otherwise you're pushing too much bass and palm mutes will turn to mud. The JB is often noted for its lack of bass but works well with high-gain situations (Megadeth, etc), while the Distortion is noted for having a bit more bass but nothing in the mids because of the ceramic magnet.

And I just noticed the one I have has a sticker on the bottom that says H1-. It came in a box marked H2+, and I was told it was an H3+ when I bought it off another forum. All this time and I never noticed either sticker :lol:

That could explain your relative lack of enthusiasm for it. As I'm sure you're aware, the H1- is a much-lower-output unit typically used in the neck slot.

As for the warmth/gain equation, the HN3+ is the best compromise I've heard thus far. It can get pretty nasty when called upon--not quite 500T or SH-6 nasty, but close--but it never gets shrill or fuzzy. If the H3+ has that same character along with a broader (that is, less mid-focused) tonal palette, it could be ideal.
