Angus Pickup match

Hey all, been a while since I've posted anything, but tonight I just put a Gibson Angus Young pickup in the bridge of my Gibson SG, and kept the 490 in the neck position.

The SG is a new guitar for me, and it's set up fine, but the 490R seems a good deal more powerful than the Angus. More meat and potatoes if that makes any sense. I've seen that the Angus Custom SG comes with the Gibson '57 Classic in the neck position. Is that actually a little mellower pickup that would meld better with the Angus in the bridge?

Does anyone know of another warm/full sounding neck humbucker (with a nickel cover of course) that would match up well or at least have the specs to the Angus pickup so I can speculate what might work?

Thanks for the help!

By the way, the Angus pickup is nice, pretty bright pickup, and seems to respond better to crunch than a nice clean tone, whereas something like a '59 responds really well to clean tones and shines with overdriven tones.

Re: Angus Pickup match

the angus pup is really bright and kinda thin but into a raging marshall it sounds huge. if the pup was hotter and more bottom heavy it wouldnt sound as good for that tone.

ive never found a good match in the neck, lower the neck as far as you can. a jazz neck might be a good match, a little less bottom and not a ton of output

Re: Angus Pickup match

Yeah, the Jazz neck would be the best bet.

If your 490R is 4 conductor, you might also try running it in parallel as opposed to standard series operation.

Re: Angus Pickup match

I never even knew there was an Angus pickup! I find my Custom 5 in the Epi SG gives me a pretty dead on Angus tone, and it's paired with a Jazz which works jsut fine.

Re: Angus Pickup match

Awesome, I might try a jazz in there. When it comes to two humbucker equipped guitars, I typically play one pickup or the other, but I found that playing both pickups (in the middle position) offers the best sound. It has the thin trebly high end punch of the Angus pickup, and the warm growl of the 490R in the neck.

I did have to drop the neck about as low as I could get it though.

Just as a heads-up, I did contact Gibson's service department via email to see what recommendations they might have, and if they would have any of the specs of the pickups so that I could make a decision myself.

Turns out, Gibson doesn't release that information, and the service tech that replied to the email absolutely answered none of my other questions. What was I thinking?

I'll stick with my Duncans for any further aftermarket mods...

If you decide to sell or trade that Angus, hit me up. I would like to have it.

Re: Angus Pickup match

I have an Angus and I moved to the APH1 because I wanted something a little less bright. I have to admit, it LITERALLY SOUNDS LIKE ANGUS, to the point it scared me. Had it in my LP.

Funny seeing this because I just thought the other day, I am bored with the APH1 and was thinking of either putting a Dimarzio 36th Anniv PAF in, or using the Angus since I already own it. It has the perfect bite and bark, robust in the lows without being farty, and its good for hard rock and metal, but shockingly can be PAF-like (with steroids) and bluesy.

It sounded AMAZING with the Gibson 57 Classic, APH1, or SD 59. I think a Jazz would work as well, so would a Dimarzio PAF or VPAF, though I would go with the Duncans and Gibsons first.

Re: Angus Pickup match

I guess I'm gonna pull that 490R outta that neck slot, and try either the Jazz, or a '57 classic. I do love the '59 though too, and lord knows I have been dying to find another guitar to put one of them into.

I think the next difficulty in this situation is finding a pickup with the nickel cover (for the neck position), and possibly finding a stoptail piece and bridge for the SG in nickel. Otherwise, the easier way to go would be to take the cover off the Angus, and load it back into a chrome cover to match the hardware already on the body.

Does that make sense to you guys?
