Angus Young Sig Humbucker

Re: Angus Young Sig Humbucker

I seem to sense a lot of words being thrown at a rather small wall. Would you care to elaborate?

The Angus Young is a balanced coil 9k same wind as a 57 Classic because thats pretty much all Gibson knows how to do, It has the same short rough alnico 5 that you take out of Burstbucker Pros and stick full length rough Alnico 4s in their place to make the pickup sound halfway decent. Anyway yeah its a short rough Alnico 5 in a 9K Gibson 57 Classic, thats what a Gibson Angus Young pickup was.

Re: Angus Young Sig Humbucker

And from that you determined the wind pattern? And It is incorrect that the BB Pro has a special variety of short roughcast A5s. I have a set and they have standard polished magnets.

From Gibson:
Give your guitar tone a big dose of hot and nasty.

With enamel-coated wire, special Alnico V magnets ["special" possibly meaning short RC], and matched coils, the Gibson Angus Young Signature Humbucker provides a 1-2 combination of vintage-style punch and ripping tone that will sear through almost anything. Comes with 4-conductor wiring for series/parallel/split-coil variations. Wax potted twice [57+ is only potted once, but I don't know how much a difference this makes] to eliminate unwanted microphonics.

Burstbucker pros have short rough degaussed A5 I have cracked dozens of sets open and replaced them with rough 2 1/2 Alnico 4 for myself and customers so you dont know what your talking about there. Gibson doesnt use a polished A5 Duncan does, Gibson uses a a Polished degaussed A2 and a Rough degaussed A2 in their Burstbucker 1 2 & 3 The Angus Young has a short Rough Alnico 5 and is a 57 Classic wind. Its been nice teaching you, goodbye.

Given you've done so many BB Pro swaps you probably have a spare short RC A5 laying around so show me a picture to prove it's rough and 2.25" and I'll give you the benefit of the doubt on them being degaussed. I swapped my BB Pros with an A3/UOA5 combo (in the process of hybridizing them with a BB 3) and I probably would have noticed if the stock magnet was that different visually from a smooth long magnet.

And where, may I ask, did you aquire the info that the Angus set had a beefed up 57+ wind? I haven't seen it anywhere.

I find it completely hard to believe that a company such as Gibson that will go to the lengths to tell you whether or not the headstock angle is vintage correct will hide from its customers that it's PAF replica has accuracy that very few major pickup winders match in their PAF replicas.

I told you Gibson has NEVER used a full length polished A5, they use short rough A5 it is their heritage.
Gibson is not a pickup company they are a guitar company. They have a one wind they do on a cnc machine, the only thing that changes is the number of turns. They use 2 wires enamel and poly. They used 2 1/2 Rough A2 in the beginning but bought what they could so A3 A4 and A5 at full length can be found up till 1959. In 1959 they ordered A4 because it was all the vendor had. In 1961 they switched to short rough A5 it is their heritage.
They currently use short rough A5 in burtbucker pros and the 498t. They use 2 1/2 rough A2 for burstbucker 1 2 & 3. They use polished A2 for 57 classics and 490s. They use ceramic on 496 and 509. The only other magnet they use is rough A3 in custom buckers.
You can take this info to the bank. I have been using and taking apart Gibson pickups for 35 years. I don't know a lot about Duncans other than the ones I used like Gibson's but I know Gibson very well.

I just cracked a set of Patent Number 490r 498t and even they had the polished A2 and short rough A5 I have owned 498ts from about 1998 1999 up to 2014. What Gibson is doing now who knows but I know for fact if you cracked a Gibson T that had a full sized polished it was a 490t and it was A2.
I know very little about Duncans other than the few models I consume but there is very little I dont know about Gibson pickups.
I got my fist Les Paul in 1980 and began taking it apart. From there worked at several stores in the repair department and authorized service centers. The Guitar Center and and Musicians Friend closed them down I began to work from home.

Re: Angus Young Sig Humbucker

If I may be so bold as to ask, what does your 61 go for approximately? Thanks.

Hi I havent used this forum in years and was just researching the High Voltage and happened across this old post.
I noticed the question never got answered and I knew the answer. Anyway my SG61 is a Gibson USA not a Custom shop it was 1999.
They made a Custom Shop that year as well

Re: Angus Young Sig Humbucker

The 61 Reissue I just used the to rough A5 I got from a Burstbucker Pro set I did a rough A4 conversion for a customer to make the 57 Classic in it true 1961 specs as well, the 50s Standard Plus Top I did the 59 rough A4 conversion with hand wired harness vintage taper pots and luxe bumble bees.

Re: Angus Young Sig Humbucker

How did the A4s do in 57s? I was thinking about doing that swap to my ES-175.

Rough A4 in the 57 is incredible its really the magical magnet for overdriven rock N roll like Zeppelin Skynyrd Etc, I find A5 is better for Ozzy Sabbath and that likes. Rough A4 in Burstbucker Pros takes a pickup I was throwing out and makes them really shine. I have also done the rough A4 in the Duncan 59s and the Duncan Pearly Gates and both were simply magical.
