Angus Young vs Pearly Gates

Re: Angus Young vs Pearly Gates

Angus' tech, Takumi, came to us a year or two ago with a two-part challenge: restore his #1 touring guitar, and #2 make his backup tour guitars sound like his #1. The big challenges with Angus: extreme volume from the amps, and extreme sweat.

For #1, we made a backup pickup. And it was good thing we did. The original pickup failed just a few days after we gave Takumi the backup.

For the tour guitars, we used a stock PG in the neck and a PG with a degaussed magnet in the bridge. That was the ticket. And that was the pickup set in the Gibson CS AY model. The Gibson USA model had standard Gibson-made AY sig pickups.

That #1 guitar was the smelliest guitar I ever strapped on. Gross!

Re: Angus Young vs Pearly Gates

Gibson rates the Angus at 13.5K with an A5. To me that doesnt sound right for his tone. I would think something with less output. I think he gets the majority of his sound out of his amp.

Re: Angus Young vs Pearly Gates

doesnt he dime his plexis all the time? to me it seems like there would be a **** load of gain if he used 14k pickups.

No he doesn't dime them he runs them on about 8. Even then they aren't high gain monsters. But they do compress and sing very nicely like that.

Re: Angus Young vs Pearly Gates

Is Angus even using Marshalls live anymore? I remember him using Wizard amps as far back as '05?

Re: Angus Young vs Pearly Gates

I have been trying to duplicate AY sound for a while now. I use an SG with mahogany body and have tried a few Marshall amps with settings and internal setups. I use the Gibson AY sign. Pup in the bridge. The problem is there is no meat in the 250-350 Hz area and the highs are too thin. The Angus sound has a beefy character with a biting pick attack. Even the high notes are full of lower midrange. I am thinking of contacting the SD custom shop for a replica lets say the PG with degaussed magnet?

Just call and ask them they have all the specs of what they have built for everyone easy as pie.

Re: Angus Young vs Pearly Gates

I just bought the AY sig - not because I wanted to sound like AY, because I LOVE the neck profile, and how light it is with a warm mahogany tone. I'm trying to do somewhere between Warren Haynes and Derek Trucks - but need to do a reasonable Dickey Betts facsimile once in a while. Ya can guess what tribute band I'm in... Anyway, the stock neck pup is reasonable at best, the bridge pup is almost unusable unless I roll the tone all the way off and go for a woman tone. Which is great if that's all you want...
So I will be putting a PGn in the neck - suggestions for the bridge? For me, I use the bridge to add some mid-bright when mixed with the neck, and use the bridge alone a couple of times a night when I need that ripping solo tone. And occasional rhythms when the neck might be too muddy. I have a JB and a Custom Custom I'll be trying sometime this 3 day weekend, but still I'd like suggestions?

Re: Angus Young vs Pearly Gates

the spec has the angus at 10K,alnico 5 from a old gibson scan if that helps

I always thought angus really used the rio BBQ? there is no definitive proof he even used this sig model?
It is just what gibson put in the sig SG

I have read reports from users of the Gibson Angus p/u that it is close in specs to the 498T, reading around 13-14K, unless they've changed the wind since then. Maybe there was more than one version. The 498T in my '92 SG Standard reads 13.7k.

Re: Angus Young vs Pearly Gates

Rise, thread of the dead.

There is no virtue to a thread simply because it's new, as almost all threads are repeats of something else that's been discussed many times before. A very nice thing about using old threads is that you get a lot of background info, and usually don't have as many people speculating on things they don't know about, or have forgotten about.

Re: Angus Young vs Pearly Gates

This thread did have lots of good info, like post #21. And then if a person starts a new thread, people will post "didn't you search - this has been discussed before". But some of the info of this thread was to sound like AY - not my goal.
So, thanks for the 2 suggestions for far - hopefully more SG players can make suggestions.
