It's so true. Try putting together a band and you'll see what I mean - you will find 20 guitarists who are interested, and not a single bassist. Keyboardists are hard to find too. I guess everyone wants to play guitar.

Gibson has made a lot of very questionable business decisions lately. Couple that with the declining quality of their product, and we may be witnessing the last days of this historic company.

Meanwhile, FMIC seems to be doing everything right business-wise, and the quality of their product has improved dramatically in the past 5 - 10 years. Expect them to be around for a very long time.

I agree, Fender and it´s subsidiaries (Guild, Benedetto, Gretsch, SWR, Tacoma And Jackson/Charvel, among others) are all doing quite well, the products aren´t generally overpriced, and the quality is there as well.... I only wish J/C would "push" themselves more ;)

Re: Annother Interesting Read About Gibson

I knew it!!! Gibson is now at a point where it makes sense to become a household name. They'll be tackling the parents and kids strolling through malls, they'll continue to make quality guitars for working musicians, and they'll have the upper end market covered.

I don't think Gibson is stupid for doing it, from a business standpoint. Of course, they'll look like big sellouts, but they're a business!

The part that's almost embarrassing to admit is that many of us ARE their ideal target.
I bought my first guitar and amp in the Sears catalog because my parents refused to haggle with some dikk at Guitar Center over a $400 guitar. I got a Harmony electric for $50 and horrible amp for $20. Now, I have $75,000 worth of gear, and have owned more than 10 highend Gibsons. I hate to admit it, but I'm the guy they're going after from age 9 to 60..........but it doesn't bother me because my Gibsons still kick the crap out of every other guitar I've owned.

From a busines standpoint it´s either near genious or ultimately stupid, but only time will tell ;)

Look at the bright side. When you're shopping in stores, you'll be able to take a break and play a decent guitar for a few minutes. I don't even look at the First Act guitars I see at K Mart. I'd pick up an Epiphone though.

I don't really see how these could be "decent" at the price points they're aiming for.

Re: Annother Interesting Read About Gibson

Thank ****ing God I already didn't want to associate myself with anything Gibson. This just reassures me staying away.

Re: Annother Interesting Read About Gibson

Who would buy those things? Wouldn't it be way smarter to buy a half-decent acoustic then a crappy electric and a crappy amp, that's what my parents did and all my friends parents did. And when you're past that stage you would never buy an electric like that anyway, so what's the point?

Why not? Many, many people rave that a Squire strat at $199 is a great starter instrument. If it's ok for Fender, it should be ok for Gibby.

GJ makes his statement better than I could. I am Gibson's target market also. 30 something with average talent, delusions of grandure and plenty of disposable income.

I agree, there are some pretty good Squiers out there. I think cheap instruments keep getting better and better. It's just some people and so uninformed and don't do any kind of research and they end up with a crappy instrument.

I want to take up the bass, it's lots of fun to just to pick up and play and doesn't sound retarded to just fool around with...

anyway, if Gibson focused its quality control and made instruments that were actually better than epis then maybe they would sell better...

I just remembered that Gibson already has the "kramer" brand under them selling 60 dollar strat-copys, why not just market those? I'm confused...although musicyo never has any kramers in stock...lol

A week or so ago I was at guitar center and was like what the hell, I picked up the epi LP Jr thing and WOW, it was NICE, the action was WAY lower than it should've been but still played really well and sounded nice through a TSL...for 100 I was really surprised at how well it played...I was astonished. actually.

Nothing weird about this. They already have their Epi special line which is very stripped down and cheap. I think that what they'll try to do would be a guitar that looks better than the special, but is of even lower quality. This way they'd decrease their costs, and therefore our prices. The only problem I see would be canibalizing the Epi special line, but they'll probably retire them in favor of the studio and LP100. That'd at least seem the logical thing to do for me. In fact they'll add up to their lower line, strip down what will then become the middle of the road (of the cheap stuff, i.e the special line) and probably try to make the Epiphone line more attractive, while keeping the prices there.
