Annoying problem w/ egnater rebel 30 amp head

I have this annoying issue with my rebel 30 head where after 20-40 minutes the sounds starts to fizzle and cut out. I've disconnected my pedals and run straight into the amp, and it still does this. I've verified that neither the guitar or amp are the issue by plugging directly into my 2nd amp which is a super sonic 22 when the rebel starts trippin' on me. The super sonic works great and does not cut out or start making weird fizzy noises.

As far as fixing this on the Rebel 30, i'm thinking i should start with power tubes. Is that correct or should I start with preamp tubes? I've had the amp a little over 3 yrs and never changed any tubes in it.

Doesn't sound like a tube problem but you can usually see if a power tube is misbehaving. The tubes are clearly visible through the back of the amp. Warm the amp up, plug in, turn the lights off and watch the output tubes - if one is producing colours different to the others (often bright blue) you have a tube problem.

Personally, I'd take it to a tech. Or phone/e-mail Egnater customer service.

The tubes that USUALLY worn first are the Power tubes and PI. Usually, rest of pre-amp tubes last double.
The cheapest test is to swap the PI. Throw there a Sovtek 12AX7-WC (if your PI is type 12AX7) and try again.
I've found that PI tubes can last even less than power tubes.

I had an annoying problem with a Rebel 20 I played. I couldn't get it to sound good no matter what I tried.

Re: Annoying problem w/ egnater rebel 30 amp head

You haven't changed the tubes in 3 years? Well, there's your answer.

Re: Annoying problem w/ egnater rebel 30 amp head

Thanks for the suggestions. Though I've had the amp for a little over 3 years, I don't currently play shows and I usually play my guitars only over the weekends at home.

I'm off today so my Rebel 30 head has been on since about 11:30 am continuously. The annoying issue I described in my original post hasn't happened today. Nothing quite like an intermittent gear problem to drive you nuts.

Re: Annoying problem w/ egnater rebel 30 amp head

Egnater has a 90 day warranty for tubes in their amps and there's a reason for this. Tubes are unpredictable and can last from 3 days to 3 years. A complete tube change has been long overdue in your case. In my experience, the problem you described are caused by the power tubes. Don't let it drive you nuts, change the tubes and see what happens. It's that simple.

+1.

Sounds like it could be a bad tube to me. A new set of glass wouldn't be the worst thing you could do to that amp...

Re: Annoying problem w/ egnater rebel 30 amp head

Do you play it with the EL84s or 6V6s or a combination of both? Try it with only the EL84s and see if it does it. Then try it with only the 6V6s and see if it still does it. If the problem is with your power tubes this will tell you which set to replace.

Was just gonna suggest this.. I would do this test first.. but my gut tells me your gonna have to replace your tubes anyway.. your amp and ears will love you for it..

its an easy amp to bias yourself too... just re-tubed my Rebel 30

Re: Annoying problem w/ egnater rebel 30 amp head

I purchased 2 sets of power tubes (el84/6v6) this weekend online. They ship tomorrow, so hopefully this resolves the weird amp issues.

Hey infrared72,
I am currently having the same exact issue where after 20-40 mins the amp intermittently cuts out on me... Did changing the Power Tubes resolve this issue and have you ever experienced this problem again? What brand power tube worked the best for you?
Please Help!

I've owe the Rebel for about a year now and actually experienced this issue twice already. The first time I sent it off to a repair shop but I'm not confident the repair guy actually fixed this particular issue.. Both incidents happened right before shows so my frustration level rightnow is through the roof!:banghead::banghead: I feel like I can't rely on this amp anymore and was thinking about selling it BUT I REALY LOVE THE TONES and don't want to close the book on Egnater just yet.
Please HELP!!!

Thanks so much,
SB1

Do not sell it yet.!
Have you contacted Egnater.? If not ...do so.
Do you live near me.?

Re: Annoying problem w/ egnater rebel 30 amp head

Oh my
Oh my

Let me help

My Carvin and my Laney both did the same thing

The effects loop jacks
Take a short jumper
Jump the send / return

See if that don't cure it

Re: Annoying problem w/ egnater rebel 30 amp head

I've had my Rebel 30 for about 4-5 years now. Never had any problem with it and get some great tones out of it (I've replaced all of the pre-amp tubes with other than 12ax7s which helped the tone immensely).

I'm interested if the OP ever resolved his problem with the power tube change.

Hey zzmoore,
Sorry for the late reply. Busy week at work!! I really don't want to sell it. I haven't contacted Egnater; do I just email their customer service?
Live near?... I live in San Diego if that helps...Thanks for any advise you can give.

@ehdwuld, What's "jump send/ return"?.... I don't think it's those inputs I've went direct and still the issue persist..

@GuitarDoc, I'm willing to put all new tubes but don't want to throw more money at it until I know for sure this issue can actually be fixed. I'm extremely curious too!

Thanks for your help guys! :friday:

Re: Annoying problem w/ egnater rebel 30 amp head

Well...Yeah...That is what CS is for. ;)
Describe your problem in best detail you can (link them this thread if you want) and see if they have encountered this before.
They may have a fix for a fairly common problem.
Cannot remember if you said, but this may also be a warranty issue.
Only one way to find out. :fing2:
good luck

Re: Annoying problem w/ egnater rebel 30 amp head

If you've ruled out tubes, return to ehwuld's advise about the send/return FX loop jacks. I'm finding this to be a common problem on modern amps. If they get oxidized, they intermittently cut out the signal till there's eventually no signal. Scrub out every jack on the amp with contact cleaner or alcohol on a Q Tip. Plug something into every jack on the amp 50 times while scrubbing them all out. Amps going in/out can usually be diagnosed as an oxidized jack, if the tubes aren't bad.

Re: Annoying problem w/ egnater rebel 30 amp head

He said he has tried going direct.
Oxidized jacks not not conduct for 20-40 minutes, and then stop conducting.
He has a thermal problem....a cold solder joint, radial crack, or something of that ilk.

Re: Annoying problem w/ egnater rebel 30 amp head

My Laney did exactly that
Played about 5 min then no sound

Swapped send jack of the effects loop
All is fine now
