ANoNCCD!! LOLWTFOMGBBQ!!

The Drama Dude
Advance Notice of New Custom Cab Day!

lol

Just placed an order with somewhat local and extremely well reputed Saxon Cabs for a 2x12 to go with my new Tubemeister 18 head.

Here's the specs:

Size: Standard 2x12, 28"W x 17"H x 12"D
Material: 5/8" Birch Ply
Style: Vertical w/ slanted baffle & closed back
Tolex: Black Taurus (Mesa style)
Grill Cloth: Wheat/Tan Jute (Mesa style)
Piping: White
Hardware:
- Strap handle on the 28" side
- Black steel corners
- Feet on the bottom 17" side and the 28" side opposite the handle
Wiring: mono (series)
Speakers: TBD

For the speakers I'm going with WGS, but I haven't yet decided what I'm gonna get. Likely a Retro 30/ET-65 combo so it'll sound somewhat like my old Sunn Cab which had Retro30s and G12-65s. Not sure though. I contacted WGS for recommendations cuz I've never owned a 2x12 before and I'm unsure what to expect in terms of tonal variance from a 4x12.

Should have a proper NCCD in a couple weeks when it's done! It should look something like this, but with black tolex:

Very nice. I wouldn't pair the Retro 30 with the ET65 though, the Retro's mids, highs and lows swallow up the ET65 when I had them both. Go with the more relaxed Vet30.

Cool, thanks for the tip about a Canadian cab builder. I've been thinking about getting a 1x12 for smaller gigs.

Yeah that's kinda what I was thinking as well. I understand that the ET65 has a brighter high end and tighter lows than a G12-65, so to compensate for the added high end there, I'd probably have to get a Vet 30. I still wanna see what the WGS guys say though.

There's another very highly reputed builder much closer to you, Voltage Cabs, made by the same guys who run www.steamcomusic.com
I might've gone with them seeing as they're my source for WGS speakers, except for the fact that they're a) a bit more expensive than Saxon, and b) don't have the right dimensions I was looking for (ie very close to Mesa 2x12 specs). Voltage's regular cabs are slightly oversized, and their oversized cabs are WAY oversized. Saxon's dimensions are more inline with most other cab dimensions, and the prices are hard to beat. Tim at Saxon is also an authorized Eminence dealer, FWIW.

Re: ANoNCCD!! LOLWTFOMGBBQ!!

I used to own a lopoline cabinet.

it was alright.

this looks good although I'm a fan of standard black on black style cabinets: Marshall Cabs, Mesa Rectifier cabinets... etc.

Winnipeg is not much better than Ontario when it comes to shipping, but thanks for a second option.

Re: ANoNCCD!! LOLWTFOMGBBQ!!

I got a diagonal 2x12 from Tim (Saxon) last year (thread here). Bomb proof, amazing sound. Couldn't be happier. The thing is built extremely solid and Tim's a great guy!

You'll love that thing!

Good to hear! This just about echoes every other review of his work that I've seen. He seems like a really nice guy. I'm excited :D

Man that tan and black Mesa is sick.
When I had a pair of ET65s I didn't find them bright at all. They may be brighter than the original, but the Retro 30 has much stronger treble. Not harsh or piercing, just really cutting and present.
I like my Retro 30's by themselves. I mixed them with V30's, T75's ET65's, GB's Legends. They just don't need and help with projecting any of the major freq's. Great Bass, great mids, great treble and they even break up a little when pushed hard adding a nice warmth to even the most modern gain tones. Nice for a 75w speaker.

The WGS guys will likely say ET65 and Vet30, or Vet30 and Reaper depending on your wattage needs. The ET65 and Vet30 combo sounds GREAT. But also think about straight Retro 30's for a 150 watt cab.
I also have a pair of Vet30's mixed in a 4x12 with Vintage 30's. The Vet's are less articulate than the Retro, and darker. They mix well with the high mids and bright presence of the real Vintage 30.

Re: ANoNCCD!! LOLWTFOMGBBQ!!

Well, I had a mix of Retro 30s and early 80's G12-65s in my old Sunn 4x12. Loved the combination, and really loved the Retro 30s. So much nicer than Vintage 30s.

I just have no experience with ET-65s, and haven't heard them in person either.

Funnily enough, WGS guys got back to me and recommended the Retro30/ET-65 combo. I think I'll probably go with that, seeing as I don't mind a brighter tone generally. My only concern is that a 2x12 won't be able to have as much low end projection as a 4x12. I think the Tubemeister should be able to deal with that fine as I found myself turning it way down when I used my buddy's oversized Mesa Recto 4x12. Assuming that the recto cab is a ++low end kinda cab, and my 2x12 will be a neutral low end cab, I think I could probably get away with increasing the bass a bit on the amp and recovering some of the low end that I heard in the Mesa cab. So yeah, should be fine with the retros and ET65s.

Also I'm not really concerned with wattage at this point since it's only an 18 W amp. Regardless of which speakers I pick, there's gonna be AMPLE power handling capacity so cone breakup might not be something I'll ever hear.

Re: ANoNCCD!! LOLWTFOMGBBQ!!

Ok, speakers have been ordered. Decided to stick with the Retro30/ET-65 combo like I initially planned.
