Another bass distortion question

My bro plays bass and just recently he heard a song with a distorted bass solo in it. Anyway he REALLY liked the idea of a bass with distortion and he asked me how he could distort his bass and I said maybe a distortion pedal for the guitar would work. What I want to know is will a distortion pedal for the guitar work with a bass and is it a good idea? Like it won't ruin the amp or anything will it? Also if it will work what pedal(s) would you guys recommend for perfect bass distortion so that it's not too muddy/blurry/fuzzy but still sounds dirty and friggin awesome?

Re: Another bass distortion question

hey man bass with distortion most of the time is cool as long as its controlled well. i use several(big muff, hm2,ds1,dod fuzz) and the big muff sounds good just keep the level the same as the undistorted signal and you should be ok. experiment and like most people just listen and go by what sounds good. also if you run a stereo setup with clean and distorted on the other side it makes for a killer sound

Re: Another bass distortion question

The way I used to go about it was with a bi-amp set up... I would run the distortion only on the high side I didnt use real harsh cross over points so i got a real nice blend of the clean and distorted sounds... Actually I used many of the same pedals that pm12 also used... Big Muff... Dod Classic Fuzz... bassballs... If you want to just try it out you can find the old dod fuzz's for like 20 bucks... It wont hurt the amp or anything at all.
