Another DiMarzio SD combo thread ...

Hi. I know this has been asked before, but has anybody in here combined DiMarzios and Seymour Duncans?. I'm looking for a clean, low output neck humbucker to combine with a DiMarzio PAF Pro in the bridge position . Thanks

What Gregory said.
A very underrated p'up. I have 2. Combine really well with PAF type p'up's
A very lively, articulate pick up. I combine my SH-2N with a Seth Lover RCA5 in the bridge.
They sound wonderful together.

If you write us your gear we should be a little more accurate. But If you ask me I'd suggest the sentient. It splits perfectly and it's bright enough to blend in tone-wise. Or at least a full shred neck (you can match the allen screws also :omg:). The jazz has a unnatural sound to my ears.

Of course. Sorry. It's a Basswood body, Maple/Roswwood neck LTD Eclipse. I also have a practice Line 6 Spider 15 classic (I'll get a tube amp eventually). The Line 6 has more than enough gain on its own, so basically I'm looking for clear, low output pups.

Jazz Neck

I don't care for them personally for anything but cleans, and I can't stand the PAF Pro in the bridge, either, but they'll compliment each other perfectly. Some people like to do something completely different in the neck (bridge for dirt, neck for cleans), in this case I guess you could go with something different than a Jazz and still have good cleans.

Re: Another DiMarzio SD combo thread ...

Jazz
Antiquity
Pearly Gates
'59
Sentient

All of these will get you there. They accomplish slightly different things, but it is worth researching all 5 and listening to clips. Whatever you pick, please come back and let us know how it turned out. Essentially, pick the EQ you want.

Re: Another DiMarzio SD combo thread ...

I paired a Duncan APH-1 neck with a Dimarzio Fred bridge and both of them have nice smooth mids. I like it a lot.

The PAF PRO has a more defined grind to the upper mids, so I have a feeling the Dimarzio 36th Anniversary PAF DP103 will be a match.

Again,
I still agree with gregory in part, but I would go Jazz/Seth.

You're absolutely right about the grind. It has a bit of a vocal aww to it. The Pearly Gates has some grind, but I still like the Jazz. Mincer is right, any vintage output SD (including the Sentient) can work depending on what you want. I'd avoid the Full Shred if cleans are important.

Fred has those crazy harmonics (some around here think that means pinch or touch harmonics; it doesn't) that the Jazz doesn't have, but I think you're right about the mids being smooth. The Jazz would pair well with the Fred too if you wanted something really clean and polite. A PAF Pro also pairs great with the Fred, but that kinda goes without saying.

What makes the full shred neck not good for cleans, if I may ask?

Re: Another DiMarzio SD combo thread ...

They are thin. For the people who like it that way, go for it! I much prefer a vintage-style single, or a neck humbucker wih a bigger sound for cleans, myself.

Don't get me wrong, I love the SH-10N paired with a TB-12. They are one of my favorite Duncan combinations for hard rock lead. I can make the pair work for cleans too; just that isn't where they excel, IMO.

Besides lead, the SH-10N is great for neck rhythm with gain (including high gain). They stay nice and tight, even at the 12th-14th frets; a quality that doesn't lend itself to a full clean sound.

I keep hearing that but can't, for the life of me figure out why.

I have a full shred set in my rg921. To me, it is balanced thru the midrange and high end. The low end is a bit too much for me.
I want to try an a4 magnet in it or something to cut the lows some.

In parallel it is very single coil like. I can see the thin remark that way

Re: Another DiMarzio SD combo thread ...

The SH-10N is wired in series and went into in a guitar that could get a tad boomy with a DD HB101N; which doesn't help support the case that it has a robust enough low end for big full cleans. I should also add that while it does pair well with the TB-12, it pairs even better if you swap the short hexes in one coil for long fillisters; at least in an a 22-fret maple-capped Ibanez SZ320.

EDIT: Didn't notice that you have an FS in the bridge.
