well since my band is a mess and i have no one to jam with now i decided to learn some covers to keep myself entertained along with still writing all my original stuff. anyway, i decided it was time to learn some more Maiden. so i was working on "Holy Smoke" since i always loved the intro to it and have the majority of it nailed (no, not the solo yet, i'm a sloppy lead player, that will take more time LOL) but right before the solo there is a...what i can only describe as cascading harmonics or a waterfall of harmonics, whichever term you prefer since i have no idea what it would actually be called LOL. so, how is that done??

I don't know the song, so I may be completely off base, but I think what you do is you do repeated pulloffs (i.e. on the G string 4-2-0-4-2-0-4-2-0, etc, etc) while lightly running the butt of your hand up the string (from bridge toward nut)

I haven't heard the song, but what's being described is generally some form of legato trilling + sliding your hand/finger (I generally just use a finger tip) down the string (starting at the bridge).

Don't know the song either, but thats what it sounds like to me too.... the palm mute slide towards the headstock, as you do some open string pulloffs. I know some of my clips have me doing that but I'm not sure which ones.

I actually wanna grab Seventh Son...Thats the last album with Adrian right? (before doofus joined the band :laugh2: )

I remember listening to a friends copy at the time and just not liking the album much..then again, I didn't like SIT that much either back in the day, and now for the most part I really like it, but mostly cos Adrian Pwned on that album playing-wise. I thought the songs and everyone elses performance was mediocre at best tho.

guys, yeah i thought it was that, i just have this issue with getting it to sound loud. it always seems to work yet sound fairly quite. i'll mess with it some more later.

as for the song...jeff, check it out it's a cool maiden song!

i decided to learn some obscure i guess you can say maiden songs...pretty much anything with some cool riffs not caring about who was on the CD or in the band at the time.

so i learned, "Futureal", "Holy Smoke" "Be Quick or Be Dead" along with the ones i already knew, the classic must know stuff LOL "Number of the beast", "the trooper", "the wicker man", "wrathchild" granted i didn't bother to learn them all the way through but learned all the cool parts from each of the songs....intros, main riffs, catchy lead lines yadda yadda.

yup, i went on a maiden kick lol.

VOLUME...you need some serious volume to get that those pulloff harmoincs to sound right. AND you need to be heavy handed with the pulloffs.

oh come on "the wicker man" is a classic riff. i ment that more than a classic song and like i said in my PM i never cared who was on a maiden album singing or doing whatever. it's all abut the guitar riffs for me with maiden. i don't think i know lyrics all the way through to any song but i can sing all the guitar parts LOL.

Many fans cite SSOASS as the best Maiden album. It's a moody, mellow and progressive concept album... and it isn't the easiest album to get into. I really think it's the Maiden album with the most awesome displays of power.

Must get, Jeff. Must get. NPFTD is definitely *no* Seventh Son, even though they are consecutive releases.

Whilst Mike has a point... listen to the studio version of 'Sign of the Cross'... then listen to it live on Rock in Rio. Both versions are great, but Bruce's live rendition of it is more than moving.


Sign of the Cross is definitely an under-rated Maiden classic. Other under-rated tracks include Transylvania, Innocent Exile, Genghis Khan, Alexander the Great, SSOASS, The Prophecy and Afraid to Shoot Strangers. I enjoy these tracks more than The Trooper, Fear of the Dark, etc. and I'm sure that everybody else would enjoy them more too... if they took the time out to digest them.

The opening section of the solo has a couple little things going on. It's a little cheesy so I'm not going to transcribe it but here is what is going on.

The first part is a harmonic glide. Its an old trick that guys used to use all the time in the 80s. Lightly glide your finger over the string and pick really fast. Start at the nut and work your way towards the fifth fret. I think the first one is on the A string but try different locations and strings until you find the area of the guitar he used. It sounds like he started from the nut up but it is also possible from the higher frets down or even from the bridge down. Since this solo "part" resolves at the open in the first case and in a open string pulloff lick in the second case it's probably nut up this time.

Right after the opening harmonic "smear" (beats 7-8 or so into the solo) you can hear the open D and G strings ring, then he does it again but the smear is higher in pitch, which means he found a higher pitched string to smear. probably the D string in this case, so do it again.

The close of the second smear ends op with some thing that sounds like a 4-2-0 pulloff routine that ends on a second string/third fret whole step bend up to E.

Sounds like there is a light flanger in there as well that adds to some of the round, envelope type of sound of the smears (glissandro).

The rest of the solo is actually much easier to figure out.
