Another JB Thread

Hello good folk, in your esteemed opinion which make(s) of guitar is best suited for the mighty JB?
Body wood, neck wood, fretboard?
Type of bridge?

For high gain?

Have an awesome day
Cheers, Kev

Re: Another JB Thread

300k Volume 500k tone for a Gibson
250k all around for a Strat or Tele
500k all around for anything PRS or Ibanez

That's the secret, but sometimes you might need to change the pot values, sometimes you might need an A2 or A8 magnet.

Re: Another JB Thread

My setup that I like: Alder body strat with maple neck and rosewood board. 500k volume with 250k no load tone and a 18nf cap. A4 mag with A2 spacers.

Re: Another JB Thread

my jb is in a hamer chapperell with 500k volume and tone controls, .015 tone cap. maple/rw bolt on neck, mahogany body, floyd rose.

Re: Another JB Thread

I used to have a JB in a thin mahogany with a thick maple top Ibanez RGA with a thin wizard neck and a rosewood board. 500K volume pot, no tone. It sounded great!

Re: Another JB Thread

The JB I replaced a 500T with was an improvement (in my opinion) in a LP Classic. I liked it much better for lead than rhythm playing though

Re: Another JB Thread

JB also sounds excellent in a Black Korina guitar with a Black Korina neck and Ebony fretboard.

Re: Another JB Thread

JBs also sound a heck of a lot better in a band than in a bedroom BTW.

Re: Another JB Thread

Floyded basswood superstrat with maple neck and rosewood board = ahhhhhhh.....

(in a band in the mix)

500t = Duncan Distortion. I can see that in a Les Paul.

I didn't give the 500t a lot of time. Bought the guitar and swapped both pickups a week later. 500t isn't a bad pickup at all, but I probably rushed it out

I've read this before. It's been about 15 years since I had a JB and back then I was using a POS amp so I can't judge. What makes you say tht? I'm a bedroom kemper player - should I just avoid the jb altogether? Why?

Re: Another JB Thread

One JB installed in an alder/maple/rosewood Kelly with Floyd, sounds great, not honky (at least until I reach live volume, then I need to change my eq a bit). A bit bright and lacking strength for my taste but it sings like no other.

My other JB is installed in an alder/maple/maple floyded Jackson...in the neck. Sounds surprisingly good there, a bit like a Jazz, only stiffer, with a hint of added crunch if that makes sense.

So I think JBs like bright woods.

I use the JB for gigging and at home, and with an Am Std Strat with 250k pots, Alder body,maple/Rosewood neck, it sounds great everywhere. At home you just have to turn the treble and middle down on your Amp a little. This, "better with a band than in a bedroom", is just typical internet speak.

Re: Another JB Thread

To me, the JB sort of imparts its distinctive sound on everything. In many cases it overtakes the tonal sound of the wood and hardware, and does its thing.

Re: Another JB Thread

For a long time, I ran a JB in a Koa Carvin DC400 and it was great. Recently I changed it back to the old stock Carvin pickups it originally came with just to revisit its roots. It still sounds very good and the split coil function is actually better.

It's very upper-middy. It cuts through amazingly well, and it finds its own place among the rest of the instruments. I do like it through my 1W bedroom practice amp too, though.

Re: Another JB Thread

I like it better in fast attacking guitars. Something like an ash body Tele with a maple neck and fretboard is perfect for it. Strats, excellent.

Les Pauls and such, I'd be a bit cautious. It's already thick sounding enough as it is, but Al Pitrelli used a JB in a Les Paul with Megadeth and it was alright I guess for it's context.
