Another malfunctioning YJM Fury Pickup

A few years back I ordered a YJM Fury and it was dead on arrival. Now I have a second one that has gone dead. It worked initially when I first installed it. I removed it to try some neck single-coils. I placed it back in and it's malfunctioning. I have double-checked my solder joints. They are rock solid.

Something simply broke somewhere in the pickup.

Quality control is not present I guess.

I haven't heard that is specifically is a problem with these pickups. Are you getting a DCR reading on it? If you are not, I would contact the company. Usually pickups don't just 'go dead'.

Basically you'd need some physical onjury to pickup to go dead or it has to have gone through very bad conditions otherwise (ie corrosion).

Are you sure it's not the pots in your guitar. Those are very prone to break down.

Re: Another malfunctioning YJM Fury Pickup

Sounds like BS. I have used humbuckers bouncing around in storage, and one single coil with a broken wire. None of them went dead.

Not B.S. I have ordered brand new YJM Pickups before and one was dead on arrival. It happens. I checked my work. My joints are rock solid.

Re: Another malfunctioning YJM Fury Pickup

I don't doubt it happens, it is just that you are unlucky, I guess. I haven't heard it happening without serious abuse, though. I'd be interested to know whats going on. If you contact SD directly, I wonder if they can diagnose the problem. This pickup is sealed, so it really isn't possible to look inside it. I would still be interested to know if there is a reading on a meter.

I think you should use multimeter to check the pickup (as Mincer suggested) first.

And what about the pots?

Something simply broke somewhere in the pickup.
So the question is really "How did it break?" and the secondary question is "was the breakage due to manufacturer fault or user error".
SD has excellent customer support and decades of reputation for building a quality product, so I guess we will see how this pans out in time. All pickups are fragile due to the super thin wire used to construct them.

You said that it worked until you pulled it out and that it no longer worked after you put it back. So the issue arose somewhere between those two operations.

Like everyone already suggested, start by measuring the DC resistance with a multimeter. If it is near 25.7Ω then the pickup is fine and there's probably a cold joint somewhere.

Re: Another malfunctioning YJM Fury Pickup

Yeah - I'm not particularly delicate with pickups, and have NEVER had one just die - let alone two.

I concur: Multi-meter first. And based on the logic of the description, it really does sound like something you did.

And Gibson - Duncan Customer service has had decades off good rep right up until 2015 or so. Not so great since then. But the product? Rarely an issue there....
