That new explorer in black WILL be my next guitar. That thing is awesome. And the new SG is cool, but I would prefer the normal control scheme.

EXACTLY!!

one of my favorite things about my old paul was that I could tweak the knobs on the rhythm pickup for less gain, and switch back and forth between the distorted bridge and clean rhythm...

Yup. And on a Paul you can some real thick rhythm high gain tones by rolling the neck pickup to about 1 or 2 and having the bridge full on and flipping to the middle...it doesn't get too tubby...still remains tight..

I also think middle pickups are usually a bit meh, the inbetween tones you can get on a strat are cool though... but you could get that sound from neck/bridge too, basically...

Actually I LOVE the sound of a strats middle position, and dislike the #2/4 sounds....I just hate the middle pickup cos it gets in the way of my picking..same issue I had with the SpaceAce and SG custom.

I'm really into the new Gibson models that have been coming out lately.



OH, and an Explorer with neck binding = DROOOOOOOL.

I wish they'd bring back the old pro with the flametop though.

I don't understand the thinking behind the new Explorer, sure its sweet and everything, I think the smaller body looks just as cool and is probably way more comfortable, but didn't they discontinue that same idea last year?

I think the new SG is kinda ugly too. The 3 pups just look crowded, and I don't care for the chicken head knob. Granted, I haven't played one, but I don't like it aesthetically. Hopefully it's easier to use than the PRS rotary. (+1 to those of you who agree it's a silly design)

And I am with Dangly and JeffB on the old set-up. I like being able to tweak the individual volumes. You can get some great tones that way.

#2/3/4 are my faves on a Strat. Fourth position especially.

I wish they would bring back the SG-Z, it's the only other model besides the Standard and "X" that I would want.

That looks cool, and I dig the controls, but middle humbuckers sound like ass - at least the ones I've played. It has to do with harmonic nodes I think - the two coils are basically on either side of one, whereas a middle single would be directly under it.

I would put a Phat Cat in the middle before I even plugged it in. In fact, I think Phat Cat, Phat Cat, Brobucker would be a perfect pickup combo for that thing.

So I think what we're both thinking right now is: THE OLD ONE WAS BETTER!
Still I suppose this one's better than nothing, and I'm really loving the new Les Paul classic antique, which now has pictures up on the website btw.

i dunno, i dont think a fancy top like that has a place on an explorer. the plain black one would look so much better with those blocks though
