So I love my green Matamp. Tone, style, build quality... perfect. I decided I'm done buying amps unless I found a great deal on an Orange Overdrive 80 or something. Then some dude posted this Orange Overdrive 80 on Reverb.com like 20 minutes later so I bought it.

This is one of the later 90's ones. I don't know if Matamp was still building them at the time -- the Matamp says "Designed by Matamp Huddersfield" and the Orange just says "Made in England." Same control layout, except on the Matamp the Gain knob is before the EQ knobs but on the Orange the Gain is after all of the EQ. I don't know if that's why, or if it's the different wattages or if there are other differences to the circuit, but their tones, while similar, are very different. The Green is much fuzzier and fizzier and the lowend is way bigger and fuller. The Orange is a lot tighter in the bass with richer midrange. They both growl in that low-mid territory you'd expect from the old OR circuit but they each have a distinct personality -- kinda like how Les Pauls and SGs have their own versions of the Gibson sound, or Strats and Teles are different spins on the Fender sound.

Both are keepers. I can mix and match as I please, but I'm thinking of just leaving the Matamp and the Sunn rigged up for my bass and the Orange and 69 Bassman for my guitar stuff. :smokin:
Thanks for reading.
