Another pickup advice thread!

Hey all..

So I've got a '72 Tele Deluxe Reissue, and I'm thinking of getting a Pearly Gates for the neck, and a Custom Custom for the bridge. Would these be good compliments to the tele's alder body/maple neck? I mostly play experimental rock/blues.

The second part of my question is, are these gonna cut through in a band situation? My bass player likes to use fuzz, and I've heard that the Custom Custom is 'smooth', which could make it hard to cut through that fuzz. Any other pups that would work nice in tandem with the PG, or should I stay with the CC?

Welcome to the forum.

Those pickups will work well for the sounds you want, but you will need to get a new pickguard to install them, as the Fender Widerange units that come stock in your guitar are not the same size as a standard 'bucker.

Ohhh yeah...I remember hearing that somewhere before. Looks like this is gonna take some work. Thanks for the heads up though.

Re: Another pickup advice thread!

The Custom Custom and the PGn is an EXCELLENT combination... one of the best!!

Re: Another pickup advice thread!

I agree, esp for a TELE
HOWEVER, since tele's are a tad bright - if you go CC in the bridge I might do a APH1 in the neck OR a APH1 bridge model in the neck to thicken it up.

Re: Another pickup advice thread!

Put a bridge model in the neck position? Hmmm

What exactly would that do? I didn't even know you could do that...

It'd do exactly what he said. It'll thicken up the sound. Bridge pickups are made to sound thicker because placing a pickup near the bridge makes it sound thinner. They compensate by adding a bit more oomph.

bump...

Ok, another question.

Say I'm going to go with a CC in the bridge, and a PG in the neck. Would it do me any good to put in 500k pots? (stock are 250k) I'm looking for a lot of mids and a decent amount of treble in my tone, but would 500k be overkill in a Tele with these pups?

I would go with 500K for sure! The CC is a wonderful pickup but it's very smooth and doesn't have alot of bite to the treble. 250K pots reduce that bite even more.

I'd go with 500K pots with that pickup combo.

Gotcha. The CC in the clips sounds like it's right up my alley, except I wish it had a little more bite. Is there a similar pup with that extra bite, that still has the strong mids of the CC? Like somewhere in between a CC and a JB. I really wanna get some nice bitin' SRV-ish tones from the bridge.

I think that would be the Custom. I have both pickups: a Custom in two Strats and the Custom Custom in one Strat. I love them both but if you want more bite but strong mids, I'd go for the Custom.

The JB has more bite too...and strong mids.

Yeah, it sounds like the Custom is what I'm looking for in the bridge. I measured the string spacing on my Tele, and I'll be needing a Custom TB for the bridge and a standard PG for the neck.

Lew, I couldn't help but notice that you have the same exact setup in one of your Strats. Which leads me to my next and (hopefully) final question:

How did you get those to fit in your pickguard, not to mention make the screw holes line up correctly? Cause I noticed on the SD website that the dimensions for the standard HBs and the TBs are slightly different, with the TB having 3 screw holes for its mounting bracket compared to the single screw hole of the standards. At this point I'm thinking I'm gonna need a custom pickguard cut for standard dimensions at the neck, and trembucker dimensions at the bridge, but there has to be an easier way, right?
