Another question about modes

Hey all
after you lot explaining to me about modes i went to my teacher and asked him to teach me it in detail and he gave me this progression and named the modes he's gonna play over them and then wrote a table for me with C and C# and write what mode fits best that note over what chord

this is the progression:

D (Ionian) / Am (Dorian) / F (Lydian) / F# (Dorian) / C#m (aeolian) / G#m (Aeolian) / G (Lydian) / Em (Dorian

I understood when he explained to me why Am is Dorian and F is lydian etc, but i seem to have forgotten and he went abroad for 3 weeks :| so i can't ask him till then and i'm quite anxious to analyze this

and over those chords to play

C# (Locrian) / C (Lydian) / C (Major) / C# (Aeolian) / C# (Dorian) / C# (Locrian) / C# (Locrain)

can anyone please if one understands explain to me the relation between the progression itself and then between the chord and the scale i need to play over it ?

Much appericiated

Re: Another question about modes

Depends what context your using them in. For any major chord, the major scale will work, minor chord, minor scale etc. Dorian seems to work well over minor 7ths.

So you're saying D/Am/F/F#/C#m/G#m/G/Em is your progression right?

It depends on what kind of approach your taking on this. Are you going to go by key scalular, or going for a chord by chord approach (which seems to be what you're doing)? And what kind of context as well (like genre-wise). Because what kind of sound your going after will definatly affect how your going to do this.

Basically (I hope I'm not confusing you more!) what EXACTLY are you trying to do?

Re: Another question about modes

after some analyzing i think i got what he was trying to do, on all minor chords he tried the aeolian, dorian and phyrgian and aeolian seems to work best (tried playing over and it seems it does, minor scale duh !) I think it's a trial and error table as to get me really familiar with the sounds and forms of all modes, i think i got it now, thanks all !

Re: Another question about modes

That's good! the best way is to play around and figure it otu and get used to each modes sound...I'm still messing with that myself!

Re: Another question about modes

It can help if you try to focus on the notes that make each scale special rather than just memorizing the scales/sounds of the scales . . . for example, Dorian is just the minor scale with a 6th instead of a flattened 6th (so it will sound good over minor 6th chords), Mixolydian is just the major scale with a b7th (so it will sound good over dom 7th chords).
