Another thread on cutting through(Distortion)

I have a great distortion pedal that sounds amazing but when kicked on in rehearsals I'm totally gone out of the mix. Is there a way to get this pedal to cut through with no Mids knob ? it only has a Treble and Bass knob...

Thanks guys!

Also while i'm here the pedal takes a 12au7 with low voltage so can I switch it to a different type of tube like a 12ax7 or should I just buy another 12au7 to improve the tone of the pedal over the stock tube

Can you turn the treble and bass way down to get more mids?

Re: Another thread on cutting through(Distortion)

if it's a Baxandall tonestack, you need to turn both bass and treble down to get more midrange out of everything. Of course, at the cost of bass and treble.

If I remember my 12as correctly, a 12au7 has ~50x gain, compared to an 12ax7 at ~100x gain. I imagine you'll break up way faster. I'd suggest looking around on what different tubes sound like; they actually do have a lot of effect on the circuit. There's a good little youtube demo on 12a tubes in an Art mic pre that the guy switches out and around, and they color the sound even in those very linear devices.

Personally I'd just do a 12au7. I think it was 5751 tube that Stevie Ray Vaughan swapped into the preamp stage of his Fenders, so if you find one of those you can be all mojo'd up.

How do you have the gain knob set? Less gain usually cuts better and can often sound "heavier"

Re: Another thread on cutting through(Distortion)

I have the gain set relatively high but not metal high gain high just crunchy Thrice kind of high, I will try lowering the gain next rehearsal

It is a Vox Bulldog tube distortion so I'm not sure if it has a baxandall tonestack... If it does not have that tonestack will lowering the bass and treble still bring out mids, I can try this next rehearsal aswell...

Thanks for the input guys , appreciated as always

I would try that too, I have a couple of boss pedals with that kind of approach, having more mids seems to help, then you may need to rise your output level. My Plimosul has no mids control and it cuts thru the mix fine so far because it already has a good amount of mids all by it self.

Are you playing with a second guitar or is it just your guitar? Maybe tweaking a bit both guitar's amp eq could help too.

Try a Totally Wycked Audio Triskelion it is great for a mid boost or full on distortion and its pretty.
