Another Zhangliqun pickup reveiw

I sent an old 70's, Japanese PAF copy to Dave a week or so ago for a rewind. I wanted a Seth like rewind...lower output, unpotted, unbalanced scatterwound coils. I received it back on Saturday. Dave did a "Ball of Yarn" scatter wind and replaced the old A2 mag with an A3.

I wired it up the other night and after a few adjustments for height and a few tweaks of the screw coils, I was rewarded with beautiful, sparking PAF tone. Very similar in scope to a Seth, but with much more clarity, articulation and single coilish spank.

It's very responsive to touch and has fantastic note bloom. I've mostly played it clean and with a wee bit of overdrive through a variety of tube & solid state amps and I'm very impressed with what I've heard so far. A great pickup for blues, jazz and rock.

Not only was Dave a joy to work with, he went far above the call of duty and basically wound me a new pickup since many of the old componets were shot.

I'm looking forward to spending more time with this pickup and ordering a few more sets before he becomes famous!

The screws in the screw bobbin were so tight and hard to remove that some of them stripped the holes, so I said screw it and gave you a new bobbin. But the new bobbin was slightly but noticeably larger than the slug bobbin so I figured, what the hey, replace that one too.

Then I noticed the mount screw holes on the ears of the baseplate were huge and chances were you didn't have the original screws and even if you did, would they work with the Tele pickguard? So I had an old Gibson 57 Classic baseplate laying around and used that.

The head of one of the polepieces stripped when removing it from the old bobbin so I replaced that one with another older one so it wouldn't stand out against the other 5.

So the only original parts left are the spacers and 5 of the poles, so yeah, it's pretty much a brand new pickup!

Man oh man.....I really appreciate all the extras you did. Played a bit more last night and this morning before work. The darn thing is just sooo sweet. The middle postion tone wixed with the tele bridge pup is very cool. Quite different than with the other buckers I've used. Funky, greasy, spanky and sweet.

That was my favorite position when I was test driving it in the LP, though the bridge pu was obviously not a Tele bridge.
