Ant Surfers or Texas Hots with my JB humbucker?

I've got 2 John Suhr V60LP's in my HSS Strat at the moment.

The Suhrs are going into another guitar and I need two real single coils to take their place.

I keep reading great things about Seymour's Antiquity Strat pickups so I thought I'd give them a shot and have a total SD Strat.:laugh2:

Should I go for the Surfers or Texas Hots with my JB?

Hey, I thought you guys already solved this problem!

No help for me?:yell:

Re: Ant Surfers or Texas Hots with my JB humbucker?

Hey...if I get no love here, I'm going back to Suhr!

Last chance for some help to buy!:fing25:

Re: Ant Surfers or Texas Hots with my JB humbucker?

neither will match the JB IMO hnag on for Lew

I haven't found a true single coil that I really love with the JB...but the Duncan Classic Stack Plus is a differant story and sounds great with the JB. Also you'll have humcancelling in all three pickup positions.

Neck and Middle Classic Stack Plus and bridge JB with 250K pots and a .02 tone cap and a blender pot to blend the neck and bridge pickups together. That's the set up I'd recommend.

hmmm...after years of using Kinman noiseless I'm missing some real single coil hum...:laugh2:

So let's turn the question around...what humbucker?

What's the best Seymour Duncan HSS setup?

Tell me, Lew!:)

Re: Ant Surfers or Texas Hots with my JB humbucker?

I'm going to be tossing a neck and middle Fender texas special into a strat with a TB-4 (JB) in a few days...

I'll let you know how I make out...

I'm guessing the JB is going to overpower the singels a tad, but I wanted the JB in there for a number of reasons...I wanted a pickup that splits well, and I wanted one that kicks ass.... :fing25:

Soulman, you might be interested in reading this thread. It's about single coil and humbucker matching and some informative comments and information from Lew.

Here's a tiny exerpt:

Years ago I called Seymour and asked him what humbucker he thought would be the best choice for use as a bridge humbucker with two vintage output Strat single coils and he advised the Jazz Neck humbucker.

I think single coils get overwealmed by a pickup like the JB. The JB is so loud that with vintage output Strat neck and middle pickups, my experience is that after playing a solo on the bridge pickup, when I switch to a neck vintage output Strat pickup to go back to playing rythym, I don't even have to turn down the volume control of the guitar. That seems un-natural to me.

So with vintage output Strat neck and middle pickups, I think pickups like the Jazz or 59 are a better match than the JB.

However, I the new Duncan Stack Plus pickups match very well with the JB...that's why I recommended them.

Lew have you tried the Jazz neck in a HSS as per Mr. Duncan's recommendation?

Nope, because at the time it was not available in trembucker spacing. I have tried the 8.2K 59TB and liked it...but truthfully, the best I've heard in a S/S/H style guitar is the Stack Plus/JB combo in the Tom Anderson I reworked a month or two ago. After trying that I haven't really considered anything else. They just worked so well together! Lew

Re: Ant Surfers or Texas Hots with my JB humbucker?

Thanks Lew and the others!

I'm getting a '59 trembucker and Ill hear how that sounds before I decide on what singles to get.

I have a jazz neck in my parker superstrat thing (hss).....works well! Has more oomph than i expected - and and nearly equal output with all pickups

There ya go. :) That's why Seymour recommended the Jazz neck as a bridge humbucker with vintage output neck and middle Strat singles. Lew

Re: Ant Surfers or Texas Hots with my JB humbucker?

SO HERE"S AN UPDATE!

I couldn't find a Jazz bridge pickup but I bought a '59 Trembucker and it is PERFECT!:laugh2:

Balances very nicely with the singles, nice and airy, no preponderant mids and a basic tone I really, really like.:laugh2:

I'm a happy guy!

As far as single coils go, I think definately Alnico 5 should mix very nicely.

It'll be SSL-1 or Antiquity Surfers, I guess.

I'll keep you posted!

Thanks for your help!:) :laugh2:

Go on...feed my GAS!:laugh2:
o own them. basically, they do the bright glassy bell strat from the sixties perfectly. through a fender twin amp, it jsut doesnt get better. its like perfect for bright cleans, and overdrive. ive not tried them for like heavy distortion, though. i use them with a texas hot custom bridge.
