Antiquity confusion. And...

anyone got experience with Mustang Antiquity pickups?

Alright, so I've got a super secret surprise project that is in need of mustang pickups (guess what it is :smack:)

After sinking so much money into the neck and body, I don't feel like I ought to use normal MIJ/CIJ Mustang pickups, I feel like I should balance out the costs and buy something suitably expensive (especially as the MIJ Mustang pickups are supposedly just strat pickups... though I wonder how much difference there is between the two really?)

So the prices for original Mustang/Duo/Musicmaster stock pickups is... alot

Figured I'd try some antiquities. Does anyone have any experience with Mustang Ant. 2s at all?

Or how about Duo Sonic Antiquities? They're listed as having the exact same specs... Has anyone tried the two? How are they different.

Answering a question I asked myself above, Ant. Surfers are surprisingly close in spec to Mustang pickups, same size, only having different inductance and Q (I have no idea what either of those does to the sound, but I figure since I'm going for a surfy tone, Surfers might be where it's at. Only problem would be that I'd need them with even pole pieces to fit under the cover, so I might need to call up MJ or Seymour, and I'm on a budget as it is :smack:

While I'm at it, I almost want to try Antiquity Jag pickups (in my Jag). Thing is, Ant 1s and Ant2s are offered. According to the description, Ant1s are meant to replicate 50s pickups, Ant2s 60s. But the Jag was only made in the 60s. So what could I expect different in the Ant1 from the Ant2s.

thanks,

Slade

Re: Antiquity confusion. And...

I knew it, I'm the only one who's ever so much as considered these pickups :D

Might just have to wing it.

Then again I can get MIJ pickups for 30 bucks each... the cheap side of me is showing through again.

Re: Antiquity confusion. And...

do you really, really need the covers on top?

it might be possible to just push the polepeices down with your thumb - would this then be suitable?

i've fitted a lil '59 in a mustang, and thats it im afraid heh - but im thinking pushing the polepeice down on a SC might let you get that cover on top?

otherwise, lace sensors or EMG's or livewire classics have 'that' look..

Re: Antiquity confusion. And...

I have not tried the Ant Mustang or Duo Sonic pickups bu trust me when I tell you this, no matter how close the specs are they sound nothing like Surfers. As for the Ant I vs Ant II, the I's have Alnico II magnets while the II's have anlico 5 magnets...if you are looking for a vintage correct sound go for the Antiquity II's, the Ant I's will have a more round, mellow, midrangy tone.

Re: Antiquity confusion. And...

I've heard you can break stuff if you push the pole piece down, breaking the coil wire specifically... I don't have much insight into strat pickup construction. As I recall people who have pushed the g string pole piece on staggered pickups down have encountered that problem?

I really, really like the way they look with covers... But not ready to go high tech yet :) So no on EMGs

TGWIF, why do you say the surfers will sound so different.

Thanks for the Ant clarification ;) I guess that explains the diff between Duo and Mustang Ants too.

Re: Antiquity confusion. And...

Slade, I'd either hop onto the Antiquity 2's or give this guy an email: name is JAson Lollar, I've heard his pickups are very authentic-sounding and amazing sounding (at least for jazzmaster, but I'm sure f he can do a jazzmaster right he can do a mustang as well). He also posts on a pickup winding forum I lurk at, and he seems like a real stand-up guy.

Re: Antiquity confusion. And...

You can break the windings by pushing down the poles in a Fender pickup...be safe and just don't do it!

As for the Surfers souding different, they are just different pickups, if they souded the same Seymour woudl only sell one model...look at the Pearly Gates and the Seth Lover...on paper they are pretty similar...7.5 or so for the neck, 8 or so for the bridge, alnico II magnet, same guage wire, PAF style, etc but I will tell you...those 2 pickups sounds worlds apart.

Jason Lollar is a great guy and makes killer pickups but I think you can be just as happy with Duncans...I have never been let down with a Duncan yet!
