Antiquity mag swapping...

I have a set of antiquities that I tried in my SG and did not care for them there. (For classic tone, it is REALLY hard to beat the 59 in an SG...) So, they sat around for a while quite lonely. Recently I finished a "finances suck right now so if I want something new I have to build it from scrap" LP special type guitar and finally had something in which to use the Antiquities. Stock, with the real weak A2, they're nice but I felt they were lacking a little something. Probably honk - I like a lot of nasal honk. I tried A3 in the neck and full A2 in the bridge - not doing it. A3, despite the alleged increased treble, always sounds weak and dark to me. The full A2 in the bridge was ok, nothing spectacular but did have a little more grunt than stock. Last night I popped A4 into both neck and bridge, slightly degaussed at neck. HOLY CRAP! This is IT for me! I am absolutely amazed at how 'vintage' these sound. The pick bite/chirp/click whatever you want to call it is magnificent, they're bright and quacky and chirpy and nasally all at the same time, roll back the volume and tone a little and it's a honkfest.... I couldn't be happier. I do feel badly, though, as I was hoping to finally like an A2 or A3 pickup. *sigh* Oh well, still looking...

Compare "The Mule".

I don't personally care for A4, but I image that if you want a SG that sounds chripy and bites it'll do the job well.

Re: Antiquity mag swapping...

I think that the SG body just doesn't work with A2's it needs the additional bass that an A4 or A5 have. I really like A2 in Les Pauls and ES33x's.

A4 Antiquities are incredible!

I've used more A4's than any other magnet. They're great for softening a bridge A5, or brightening a neck A2. In P-90's & Phat Cats, I use one in both the bridge & neck, in combination with another magnet. To me, A4's are understated & more refined; they don't blare out certain parts of the EQ spectrum that the other magnets do. I don't want that subtlety all the time, but there are times when an A4 gives you just what you need.
