Antiquity P90 baseplate mod?

I have a '54 reissue les Paul that I've put an Antiquity bridge P90 in. The baseplate was too square to fit the route so I ground off the corners (after removing the plate from the pup of course).

I got the pup with a black cover but wanted to use some cream covers I had already so I also ground off the side "lips" of the baseplate so that the creams could fit.

Are those side lips there only to hold the magnets from slipping out the side of the pup? Or is there some other tonal advantage to having them? Not that it matters now since they're gone, but I'm curious all the same.

They are keepers for the magnets but they prolly also shape the magnetic field to some extent...if you notice, the modern flat baseplates do sound a little different.

FWIW - this is my big gripe about the Antiquity P-90s. I don't like how the cover is cut to fit "around" the baseplate. It makes it so you can only raise the pup so high until the edges of baseplate sticks out above the route. I prefer the current Gibby style P-90 where the cover completely covers the whole pup. Perhaps it's supposed historically accurate, but me no likey ;)
