Antiquity Question

Is it possible to order a set of Antiquities with new covers on them? I don't dig the "aged' thing, but I do want the tone.

You can but as soon as you do it becomes a full on Custom Shop order and costs out the nose (at least that is what I was told)...I was in the same boat with my R8 but I just sucked it up and went with off the shelf Ants...if the covers really bother you that much just swap the out yourself.

Got it. Thanks!

Just curious -- what other pickups have you tried and what made you choose the Ants?

Gosh Mark...just Duncans??

-Alnico II Pro's
-Pearly Gates
-59's
-Custom Custom
-Distortion
-Seth Lover
-JB
-Jazz
-Brobucker
-78

Other than Duncans...
-Super Distortions
-PAF Pro
-Burstbuckers (1, 2, and 3's)
-Classic 57
-Classic 57+
-Shaws
-Lawrence L90's
-Lawrence L-500's
-Shaller

Several others Im sure Im forgetting!

Why Ants??? I really got into Duncan pickups all around a few years ago and started trying them all one at a time and decided right off the bat I really prefer Alnico II magnets for my buckers...I had one guitar wiht an Alnico II Pro in the neck and a CC in the bridge and another wiht a Pearly Gates set. I tried the Seth Lovers and liked them but wasn't completely sold on them I then tried the Ants and was blown away by them...

I really thought I'd end up getting them trying them and then swapping them out for something else but they have been there ever since (2+ years now!) and I just love them...they do not have a lot of output but they have a very complex tone and a very woody character to them that I really dig and talk about SMOOTH...they make a Les Paul sound like a Les Paul should to me in my head...Im sure this is different for everybody but for me they are killer!

Re: Antiquity Question

Thanks for your detailed reply!

I found someone on the Gear Page who was selling a bridge Ant with a non-aged cover so I grabbed it. Now I need a neck version.

I'll be interested to hear how these compare to my Dr Vs and Sheptones.

Re: Antiquity Question

I thought about ordering a set of Ants with new GOLD covers, and the price wasn't THAT bad. I decided to try a set of the Pearly Gates for this Les Paul Supreme, and a forum member provided me with a gold set. Just waiting for them to be installed.

I have Pauls with Ants, Seths, 50th Anniv. A2 Seths, Burstbucker 1&2, and the '57 Classic/Classic Plus set--and soon with the Pearly Gates. All good.

Hard to go wrong with Antiquitys.

Re: Antiquity Question

Howdy Mark and Christian, great to read you guys.

Here is an old thread containing some opinion including mine on the comparison between ants and other boutique pickups:

Mark, I'd love to hear your opinion on the comparison between Dr.V's and Sheptones. Actually, the information that I could not find was about the comparison of Wolfe's Marshallheads and an a5 hot antiquity (somewhere around 8.70K).

Best,

Re: Antiquity Question

Mark, Cool score. I hope you dig the Ants. I know a lot og guys say that they are weak and they are not stout as other PAF style pickups but the tone is just so sweet!

Doc, good so see you around again now and then! You know, you were the biggest influence on me to get Ants in my R8...I still need to do some magnet swaps but they sound so sweet as-is Im afraid to mess with them!

Christian, you know buddy, all depends on the wood and the particular amp and pedals you use, and also your ears. If you like them, why mess with them. No?

I am sorta done with all the pickup swapping and all. This is definitely the case when it comes to PAF clones. Haven't changed anything on my LPs for over 3 years now. They sound great, so why mess with them! :)

Lately, I have been back into superstrats, exercising legatos and 80 kinda things you know. And that's why have done swapping recently. But I am almost done: Have settled with a PATB-3 in the walnut fat strat and a CC (with short screws on low E A and D) in my mary kay white one. The only pickup I cannot wait to get my hands on is the new p-rails.

Anyways, am gonna be sticking around! :)
