Antiquity Strat pickups

Re: Antiquity Strat pickups

The TB/Surfer/Surfer or TB/SSL-1/SSL-1 are the set that I think of for those tones. I can get some lovely Hendrix/SRV tones from the SSL-1 in the neck, then flip to the TB in the bridge for a bit more grunt.

Right, sorry I had my mind on Strats! Yeah, I was gutted when I opened the case and saw the damage. After all that anticipation waiting for it to arrive and I still havent even got to play it. Its still in the shop for repairs, the guy I sent it to has a backlog of axes to deal with so its taking a while.

Re: Antiquity Strat pickups

Something to watch out for: Texas Hots are reverse polarity and wound out of phase compared to Surfers. So if you want to combine a Surfer neck and middle with a Texas Hot bridge here's what you have to do:

1. Put the neck Surfer in the middle...wire black to ground and white to hot
2. Put the middle RW/RP Surfer in the neck...wire black to ground and white to hot
3. Put the Texas Hot Custom in the bridge position but wire it white to ground and black to hot

Now everything will be in phase and you'll have humcancelling when the middle pickup is combined with the neck or bridge pickup.

That is my favorite set of Strat pickups in a Strat.

Only set I like better is Surfer neck and middle and Duncan Custom Shop A2 Tele Hot as the bridge pickup...but a Tele pickup won't fit into most Strats.

Re: Antiquity Strat pickups

I have the Texas Hots in one of my G&L Legacys, with a RW/RP in the middle and the Custom Power bridge. I think this is a very good set up, the Antiquitys have a nice complex mid-range like a good red wine. I haven't heard Surfers, but the Texas Hots are definitely darker and richer than the Duncan SSL2s that I have in some of my other Legacys.

I do like this set, the Bridge pickup has "cojones", and I think the neck pickup is about the sweetest Strat neck pickup I've ever heard.

Re: Antiquity Strat pickups

Bah, decisions! Well, my vintage style Strat project is almost underway. I got a 62 reissue body and neck on ebay. Lovely nitrocellulose 3-tone sunburst finish. I'm gonna beat the schitt out of that over the next few years! Its so much nicer that way, because it means they'll be my unique battlescars, rather than having an axe pre-beat by somebody in Fender's custom shop for more money.

Gonna have fun trying out these pickups. And spend some money, but thats what its for! Thanks everybody for all the opinions and advice!
