Antiquity Surfer Strat pup

Good for Hendrix? Does it sound thin? (I really want a pup that really exagerates the in-between quack-twang tones), how does it compare to the Texas hots and the ssl1. I'm also interested in hearing a Texas hot(n) Surfer(m) and Custom bridge combo for my strat.

Re: Antiquity Surfer Strat pup

I hope someone answers this (I can't), because the Antiquity II models never seem to get talked about here.

Re: Antiquity Surfer Strat pup

Yeah I know but I am curious about them. Whenever somebody says ants for strat they always mean texas hots.

Re: Antiquity Surfer Strat pup

yes i'm very interested in this too...
I have the t hots but wanna know how the surfer ones are too

Re: Antiquity Surfer Strat pup

ive been thinking about getting a set, just to try out. i love the texas hots but havent really played with the antiquity II strat pups. now those antiquity II firebird pups are fantastic!!

Re: Antiquity Surfer Strat pup

Anyone else got input/experience? Im very interested in the pup combo listed above.

Re: Antiquity Surfer Strat pup

I posed the same question quite a while ago, and the thread went nowhere.

I asked a builder and he said they were bright ... well, like a 60's strat pickup!

It would be interesting to know the whole evolution of the Texas Hot set, but we can imagine that it came from Seymour's many years of experience. It's as if he kept the best characteristics of a strat pickup, improved and smoothed them out, and managed to get them to sound like pickups aged like a fine wine.
Then, creating art from science, he made sure they not only sound vintage, but look, taste, and feel vintage.

Re: Antiquity Surfer Strat pup

I have Kinman Woodstocks in a tele and would love to learn about the SDs that are meant to be in the same ballpark. Questions about the Ant IIs and the Peter Green 'buckers never seem to get answered. Maybe I'll have to buy a couple guitars and find out for myself! :)

Re: Antiquity Surfer Strat pup

I used an Antiquity II custom bridge for a while. Its an A5 tonality. It's great if you're into surf, perfect for that. The high end has a definite bite, brighter than the texas hot antiquity. The low end has plenty of "knock," very tight and defined. If you are interested, I would probably sell mine to you, since I'm more into the A2 tonality. Randy

Hi Randy, How does the low end differ on the two bridge pickups? Does the a5 Antiquity have more bass and a bigger sound? Or not? Thanks! Lew

Re: Antiquity Surfer Strat pup

I use a Texas Hot Antiquity bridge, non-custom. So, the difference in output has some effect on a comparison. But, the Antiquity 2 is much bigger, and brighter on the low end. Played through an overdriven amp, the Antiquity 2 sounds bright and even, nothing's out of place. Clean, its the ulitmate surfer tone, no doubt about that. If you're interested, we could work out a trade: SM3 neck for Antiquity 2 bridge.

Thanks! I think I'll order a set of Antiqutiy II Strat pickups and check out awhole set.

Re: Antiquity Surfer Strat pup

I love the tone on so many of hendrix's songs and sometimes it's not really great, but I'd like to capture the tone from Machine Gun (live @ Filmore East), Hey Joe (solo), Wind Cries Mary, and Castles Made of Sand. You can really almost here the whole sound of the pickup in the solos of Hey Joe and Wind Cries Mary, unlike so many other songs that have a lot of effects/pedals. I really just might be interested in a Mag swap of the T hots to A5. But I'd Really like to try those surfer strat pups :33:.

Re: Antiquity Surfer Strat pup

Before you go swapping magnets you may want to try a set of APS-1 (Alnico II) Strat pickups. They are vintage toned but a little rounder and sweeter than SSL-1's and will get your guitar tone into Hendrix territory. I've never heard the Antiquity 2's but I think the APS-1's would be the better bet.

Re: Antiquity Surfer Strat pup

im not sure id say the aps is a better bet than the antiquity II's. different for sure, but the II's are probably closer to what hendrix had in his guitars
