I've read that the Antiquitys are wound by Seymour to duplicate the pickups in Nancy, Roy Buchanan's '53 Tele. True or false?
Thanks, Lew

18. Who are some of your favorite musicians?
This is a hard one as there are so many to choose from. I will start with my favorites and what I like about them.
a. Roy Buchanan: Roy was my biggest influence when I started playing guitar at the age of 13. I used to watch Roy play all the time and he taught me several tricks on the Telecaster. He taught me how to play harmonics with the right hand, how to bend strings, and how to play the blues. I owe a lot to him and I miss him very much. I was very lucky to know him and I know he influenced many musicians. Listen to Roy’s early Polydor recordings.
Thanks Curly. I followed the link to the Roy Buchanan site Scott provided and then went to the Nancy Relic page http://www.rhsdesign.com/fender51/RB53tele1.htm the same page I provided a link to a couple of weeks ago by the guy who does the near perfect copies of Nancy. He says on that page that the Antiquitys are patterend after the pickups on Nancy. That's what made me ask. Lew
I'm interested in replicating that Nancy relic tone. (Yeah, like I'm the only one.)
Wondering if the Antiquities will do the trick, or if there's something better now.

this means I have to get a set of Antiquities![]()
my opinion now, after using Antiquities, is that they are warmer pickups than what I hear from Roy's playing, or pickups made to sound like his.
Basically, Roy's '53 had a somewhat bright, "bitey" tone, so his pickups were likely somewhat underwound. Antiquities are NOT underwound. Notice that the info for Antiquities does not say they were patterned after Roy's pickups, just "early 50's" tele pickups.
early tele pickups were all over the map, output wise, even if they did have a spec, which was a certain number of turns, not a resistance.
the Antiquities are great pickups, but if someone wanted Roy's tone, I'd suggest they also consider Don Mare's "Nancy" set (buckcannon.com) -- since he has dedicated himself to Roy's music, and he's gone over all the details of that guitar.
I have a set of Duncans that Don rewound to his Blackguard #0038 specs, which are a hotter wind, more typical of the hotter end of early teles. Those are going in a 2 color burst that's being built now. (I am NOT going for Roy's tone.)Do you have a set of Don Mare's pickups, or have you heard/tried them? I've spoken with Don about them briefly.
