Antiquity Texas Hot neck vs Surfer II neck for Strat

Re: Antiquity Texas Hot neck vs Surfer II neck for Strat

Texas Hots have A2 poles....Not as chimey, not as present in the highs, more mids...Great bridge pickup..

Surfers....Love the neck and middle...Chimey,glassy,clean,clear,and articulate...Very correct vintage style strat tones...Bridge pickup is too bright for my tastes and I again refer back to a Bridge Texas Hot with the Surfers in the other 2 spots or the Twangbanger A2 in the bridge...

Re: Antiquity Texas Hot neck vs Surfer II neck for Strat

Remember its all about tates. John has great ears, still I don't agree with him on this. Surfer bridge I think is simply excellent. Could have been a little brighter actually, to make the bridge/middle tone more chimey you know. I think that texas hot custom bridge is sort of too round for a strat.

Anyway that's my ears, and it may very well be that the way I trained them + the settings I prefer on my amp (there are tons of other factors, like the body wood of my guitars versus John's) makes me go for the surfers.

Me thinks that strat pickups GOTTA have a5 rods!

Peace.

hello buddy....I don't disagree with your statements at all....I prefer the "musical magnet" A2s in my bridge positions for some reason? I actually prefer my tone to be rounder sounding and maybe that's what I Like about the A2,plus I'm a Marshall guy or I Like the Marshall tone and maybe that plays into what my ears need to hear? Guess that's cool and what makes us all different...I Like the Surfer bridge and I still own one,but I prefer the Texas Hot over it...I Love the Surfers more than the Texas Hots in my other 2 positions though..

Does the Surfer use an A5 Magnet? and why is the Surfers magnet polarity south, and the Texas Hot North?

they're "vintage correct" for their era ...
yes, Fender switched polarity

Re: Antiquity Texas Hot neck vs Surfer II neck for Strat

I agree with everyone!

I use a full set of the Surfers like Dr. Barlo in one guitar and mixed set with Surfer neck and middle and Texas Hot bridge in another Strat, like John.

I love the way both guitars sound but I do slightly prefer the "best of both" mixed set...for exactly the same reasons John described.

Surfers are A5 poles
Texas Hots are A2

Re: Antiquity Texas Hot neck vs Surfer II neck for Strat

i tried the surfer neck, it sounded good, but when compared to the APS1 middle, it sounded kind of polite and not alive......i guess its just the lack of mids or something....i think i just prefer A2 for Duncan single coils anyways....... but i hear the A2 different in singles than in a humbucker, for the Aps1 for example.....its still very clear, just a little more woody and warm than probably its A5 counterpart (SSL1?)......... in a humbucker such as the CC, the mids of the A2 are much more exaggerated and it makes the pickup have loose bass and too muddy for my liking

but i exchanged the Surfer for a Texas Hot neck and ill let you know how the difference is when it comes in

I guess I have a pretty good ear? Sure didn't happen overnight though....I'm now taking a needed break until we get out of the holidays....I need it,plus there are things I need to do to my own gear that I've been putting off....

I love the Surfers in the neck and middle,in fact, the Surfer middle is the first middle pickup I actually really use and really like...For me,the A5 poles work great in the neck and middle and I seem to like A2 magnets for the bridge, even in my humbucking guitars...Something with the mids and maybe a bit of "squish" in the tone I've picked up on....I have a Surfer bridge pickup, but not a Neck or I'd let you borrow it...

Sure Bro. I too have both of them, and am gonna keep them. ;)

I think apart from the amp and other things the difference is our perception has to do with how we see things. Remember that I am still a LP guy at heart, and thus strats for me should sound really bright, and edgey. (That's why I still prefer my 7.10-30K (I don't remember :banghead: ) van zandt blues sp over all the others.) But I think you are using strats for more stuff then I am. I guess that's why.

That is if I were not allowed to keep any hb's I too would keep a texas hot custom bridge in one of my strats for its round tone. ;)

Best,

B
