Antiquity Texas Hot

I'm considering this for the mid position in my strat. Would it be good for copping SRV tones? If not, what would you say it is best at replicating?

Re: Antiquity Texas Hot

its a good pup. great fendery tone with chewier mids, smoother top, and softer bottom. if you play with skinny strings in std tuning then it should work out fine for you. depending on what other pups are in the guitar you may want to get the rw/rp model.

whats your setup? amp?

I'm going to be putting this in my Highway One Strat. I run through a Original Crybaby, vintage Phase 45, Electro-Harmonix LPB-1 Nano, and a Boss GE-7. Amp is a Crate Palomino. As far as the guitar goes, I'm going to be putting a JB Jr in the bridge and a Lil 59 in the neck. I want a pure single coil in the middle so I can get a good mix of modern and classic sounds. I've always thought SRV had the Strat tone.

Re: Antiquity Texas Hot

he had great tone but it was alot of things working together... vintage a5 pups, the guitar itself, heavy strings tuned down, big clean amps and those bear paws he had for hands.

i find that alnico II single coils match better tonally with humbuckers so i think youll be in good shape. not sure about the rw/rp thing though, i dont usually mix buckers and single coils in the same guitar. maybe some one else could chime in with that

Re: Antiquity Texas Hot

I'm wondering what you guys think the Antiquity Texas Hots are best for, and how you think it would work with a JB Jr bridge and a Lil 59 neck.

Re: Antiquity Texas Hot

its a great pup, better than most vintage single coils out there by a long shot. it should work fine with those two pups but the output will be noticably lower obviously

Re: Antiquity Texas Hot

I have the complete set in a 57 RI Strat. They are great sounding pickups. I also have the Surfers in another Strat which I like just a touch better. Both are IMHO some of the best sounding vintage pickups SD has. I can't say how they will pair with buckers though. I like Jeremy don't do that. In the guitar that I have the Texas Hots I also have the hotter bridge pickup. Now I use 11's & have 4 springs on my whammy with a graphite nut & saddles with Sperzel locking tuners. All of these are little tiny things that make a difference. I like the warmth the graphite adds to the guitar and the Sperzels help tuning stability. This guitar has a real vintage type of sound & I like it quite a bit. The Surfers I think have just a touch more chime to them, but to be honest I can't really see either one as better. They both sound really really good, so its a matter of preference.

I am in the process of putting together what will become another great vintage type of Strat. This will have a set of Fralin Blues specials. I decided to go with these simply because I already have both Antiquities and am looking to see how they will be different from what I already have.

Re: Antiquity Texas Hot

Bludave,
Did your 57 RI have the 57/62's in it? What did you think of those pickups, and how would you compare either of the antiquities

I used to love the 57/62's I had in a MIM. I F'ing wish I hadn't sold that guitar, but needed the money for tuition when I thought I was gonna get a classic series 50's strat.

Re: Antiquity Texas Hot

I have Texas Hots in a G&L Legacy with the RW/RP middle and the Custom Bridge. Great set-up.

I decided to buy two more sets and put them in some of my other Legacys.

Don't get me wrong...I have several Legacys, and I really like the stock pickups, which are either Duncan SSL-2s or G&L CLF-100. Both are very vintage sounding, with all the bite and sparkle Strats are known for. The Antiquitys are something special, with a warmer tone.

Re: Antiquity Texas Hot

the texas hots are definitely warmer than the 57/62 pups, which are ok but not great. the ssl1 is a similar pup but with richer tone. the surfer ups the ante yet again.

the texas hots are a little different than the others since they are alnico 2, a little warmer with a chewier tone. hard to go wrong with any antiquity. never heard one i didnt like.

Re: Antiquity Texas Hot

I would say they sound "sweet", with silky, shiny highs, very even total range and fill out the bottom pretty well. A surfer is almost thin compared to it, as are ssl1/asp1.

The "texas hot" name is bogus, neither are they hot nor do they remind me of texas food. And I don't like SRV but I love these pickups.

Yours opinionated bastard.

Re: Antiquity Texas Hot

SRV's a **** fine guitarist but i couldn't listen to him all the time.

Personally, in my limited experience with strat pickups, the 57/62's were the best things I've ever played. Now that my Squier deluxe should be showing up today, I'll be enthused to plug it in and discover where I wanna go pickup-wise.

I do want something meaty but still vintage. That points towards what, texas hots? I was originally thinking aps2's to add some mids but I'm not even sure if it's a "bright" or "balanced" guitar to begin with, yet

Re: Antiquity Texas Hot

yeah "texas hot" is a little misleading. i love srv (not anybody else doing srv) and completely agree that they dont sound like him. the surfers are closer to his tone

Re: Antiquity Texas Hot

Thinking about putting an antiquity texas hot in the neck position of a bass wood japanese fender jag stang. The original jag stang set up is one "vintage style" single coil in neck and a humbucker in the bridge.

I also have an Mahaony American GIBSON SG with 490t's in the bridge and neck (stock).

Want the Jag-Stang to sound jangly and bright but also full and warm. Looking to have a brighter toned guitar to contrast the SG.

How will the 'midrangeyness' and other tonal factors of the MAHAGONY SG with 490t's compare/contrast to the BASS WOOD jag-stang with the antiquity Texas Hot in the neck and a PEARLY GATES in bridge?

How bought a JAZZ in the bridge, same equation?
Will the JAZZ be to low of an out put?

What about a JB sh-4?

ALSO if anyone has any insight about what to try and/or other factors to consider I would love to hear about them. The first time I have ever even thought about pick ups was just in the last month so i really don't know what i'm doing.

My amp is a 1970 silver face FENDER SUPER REVERB.

thank you! this is my first time on the forum.:)

ps
(should this be a thread? I thought it fits b/c of the Texas Hot theme but feel free to let me know how this forum works)
