Man, everything is just better to my ears with the UOA5 in the bridge position of an Antiquity. Tons more oomph without sacrificing too much of the stock -A2 mags (the minus means degauseed, ha).
Funny, the pickup reminds me of a Sheptone set I used to have: the Sheptone AB Customs. They had degaussed A5 mags. Tone-wise, I think the Antiquity UOA5 and AB Customs are a tie. Maybe a touch more oomph with Duncans and more clarity with the Sheps.
Maybe I just really like the UOA5 magnet. Seems like it changes every pickup for the better (my 79' Heerby Les Paul has old enough wood to make the A2 mags sound too "dull).
But I still feel like I want more from the Ants at times. Even if my particular set has an 8.8k bridge. :bigeyes2:
I certainly want more from my neck antiquity.
But why do I mention these two pickups in particula? They are my favorites so far. I'm still searching for the perfect "Hot PAF" sound. Have tried Burstbuckers UOA5, Custom 5 UOA5, numerous 59's with UOA5s, WCR Godwood and Darkburst too; the latter of which being my least favorite of the hot-PAF offerings. Burstbuckers had the best oomph but the worst clarity and grit. I'd rather take a Duncan any day of the week.
...
Now I hear of the "Whole Lotta Humbucker." Hot PAF 42gauge scatter winds with roughed-up A5 mags. The neck model in particular intrigues me coming in at 8.2k and from the demos sound to be very punchy for a neck pup, but still has that "warmed over" classic quality.
I'm not looking for anybody's sound. I don't want the "british sound" (was is that exactly?). I want my sound.
Now I arrive to my question! How different would the WLH set be compared to an Antiquity set with UOA5?
