I always thought the jack being on the face of a guitar was a disaster waiting to happen, and it never looked good (SGs, 335s).

A few models have it i believe but i know for a fact the 1212s utilizes it

You could do this. I did it on a ibanez sabre that needed modding.



it was risky actually but i imagine the sg body would be more forgiving than the sabre.

The midi goodness or the jack?

I really want a midi guitar again i always loved the roland gr stuff but could never really get over the latency and being forced to play the guitar differently to get the most out of it. The graphtech setup like on that sabre was better but i feel the fishman tripleplay is where it's at now. I NEED!

The Brian Moore (I have a C55PM) has this strange proprietary cutout on the back for the jack, probably an idea from working with Ned Steinberger. It is a good idea though. The 13 pin hex output is on the bottom edge, though.

Lol, I like that!!! Wicked cool idea (please forgive the northern NH lingo) but I can see a lot of things that could go wrong if you weren't super careful? For someone like Kramersteen who's done things like this several times before, has the tools, the confidence, and most importantly the know how, I think it's a great way to go but I wouldn't attempt it unless you have exactly the right tools for the job & the patience to do it correctly. Perhaps finding a slab of Mahogany to practice on before cutting into a $1000 Gibson might be a good idea too???

Personally, if I were the O.P. I'd just use a right angle instrument cable and call it a day.... But, if you do end up moving the jack to the side you could always put a kill switch in place of the old jack? It would fill the hole and put something functional/useful in its place???

HA! That jack cavity was so deep if you held the guitar up to the light you could see some faint light coming through the paint. Nothing was visible on the top but it was so close it's not even funny. I did this guitar with the owner/friend next to me and we knew the risks. It was extremely lucky that it didn't pop through to the other side.:friday:

Just measure 100x before you cut.

I have two Gibson SG Juniors, so I hear what you're saying, and not to be a "Debbie Downer", but I'd say they put those on the front for a reason. SG's are so thin that you'd probably fukk the guitar up trying to drill in and move it to the side. Just my opinion. If you haven't already, try using a right angled cable and wear it back through your strap. It helps. Sorry I couldn't have been of much help.

The wise man already speaketh what I was going to suggest with the angled plug cord. And running it tween the strap and back strap button. I agree with you. I visually dont care for the front jack on guitars.

Heck, I never even liked the look if a strat style set up where its at least indented.. But the straight in ones mostly. Because I know too, the unless you take Jolly's suggestions, the weight of the cord and all can eventually cause it to wear, then wiggle, then crackle..

I had a Strat jack installed on my Dean '79 V,worked out great!!!

I'd also get the one moved on my ML,as well,although it'd be on the top of the bottom of the V,right above the controls & pointing backwards...
