Any bass amp recommendations?

Can anyone recommend a good bass head or combo? Nothing too terribly expensive (sub $1000), but something powerful enough to play with a band live. Clarity is my #1 concern.

I've tried the Mesa 400+, and I loved it.. i was just hoping for something similar, but a little cheaper.

ampeg and gallien-kruger stuff is great...

i've also heard alot of good things about ashdown...but i haven't played any of those...?!

polytone. deffinately go with an original polytone. my teach played them while on tour with dylan, and if they work to cut through a band there, they will work for you.

the reissues are good, but the originals are amazing. ebay has em for not that much money. also, guitars sound sick though em.

I'll vote for GK. The newer Ampeg stuff is ok, but they have reliability issues due to some sub-par components. Besides, if you're ever played an original 70s SVT, the new ones don't come anywhere close sound-wise.

I compared an Ashdown (one of the $1k models, don't remember which one specifically) side by side with the Mesa 400+, and the Ashdown sounded like someone had a pillow over the speakers in comparison. (And the Mesa was $300 less :smack: ).

I'll definately have to find an Ampeg / GK dealer around here.

As mentioned above, check out the Yorkville line of bass amps. They're built like tanks with birch plywood, and they sound fantastic! And they are priced reasonably as well. Don't snub your nose at these amps, the proof is in the puddin'.

You need 2x the power of the guitar player to be heard with the same clarity, it just takes more power to reproduce bass. I wouldn't be concerned with brand so much as clean power output. Guitar amps are designed to scream. Bass amps are designed to loaf. My bass rig has 900 watts and splits the signal into a 410 cab and a 115. No crossover (tried it, didn't like it), each cab does what it can do and outputs are adjustable. If cost is an issue, look into some Carvin gear. Decent sounding and relatively inexpensive. Used Ampeg is always good, SWR are really decent, and Galien Krueger are outstanding.
