I get discount on s*** loads of equipment, particulalry Boss pedals as i now go to Leicester college which has some sort of certification or something... look at the website... anyway i have been thinking about one of these pedals for a while and just wanted to know how people got on with them in general, how well built are they? are they what was expected? any downfalls i should know about, etc?

Re: any boss Fuzz pedal users out there?

I have all three, the FZ-2 Hyper Fuzz, FZ-3 Fuzz and FZ-5 Fuzz.

FZ-2: Based on the old Japanese fuzzes, it's nasty, harsh and one setting has a bit of an octave effect. Used and abused by various artists in the late 90's/early 00's like James Iha, Orgy, and Korn, especially in that electronica influenced era of alt rock. Great for nasty sounds.

FZ-3: More traditional fuzz, very tame. It's similar to a Tweak Fuzz in the sense that it's like a Fuzz Face but with a little more bass and never out of control. Also, unlike a FF, you can run it straight into an amp for a "fuzz tone" just like most Boss boxes. Pretty generic, it's not bad but not great.

FZ-5: COSM digitally modeled Fuzz. Kimd of disappointing. Before I purchased it all I had was one mediocre FF style pedal. Since then I've gotten decent versions of all the modeled boxes. Needless to say, I use it by far the least of the three Bosses.

So, the FZ-3 is a decent "intro" fuzz pedal for those familiar with only standard distortions, the FZ-2 is cool for off the wall sounds (especially "digital" and harsh sounds) and the FZ-5 is best avoided.
